Abstract

657,541. Knitting. HEMPHILL CO. Aug. 7, 1947, No. 21632. Convention date, May 1, 1941. [Class 74 (ii)] In knitting a plain fabric, elastic yarn is inlaid in the initial course of inelastic yarn to form a selvage therewith and is thereafter inlaid at spaced wales in consecutive courses, and an inelastic yarn is drawn into independent stitches at alternate wales in consecutive courses, but is held and linked at intermediate wales, whereby alternate strands of elastic yarn will be inlaid to be held in alternate wales while intermediate strands thereof will be threaded between tuck loops of intermediate wales and plain loops of alternate wales. Alternate needles producing wales 2, 4, 6, &c. are loaded up with elastic yarn 1 for four courses, the yarn being fed under suitable, preferably relatively light tension and cleared. All needles then take and draw loops of an inelastic yarn 11 in course A. In the succeeding courses B to D, elastic yarn is similarly fed to alternate needles and cleared below their latches. In course B, all needles take the inelastic yarn, alternate needles knit and intermediate needles producing wales 3, 5, 7, &c. tuck. In course C, the inelastic yarn 11 is taken and knitted as in course A, all latches being cleared and held loops being cast-off. Course D is a duplicate of course B. These courses C and D may be repeated as desired, to provide a tuck edge and one or more plain knit inelastic courses may be inserted between the initial selvage course and the tuck courses. Tuck courses may be separated by plain knit courses, any of which may have inlaid elastic yarn. The body of the fabric, represented by courses E to G, may be of any desired construction, with or without elastic yarn which, if included, may be inlaid or knitted in at desired wales and courses ; shown are plain knitted courses, having elastic yarn inlaid on alternate needles at each course. Held loops may be accumulated over more than two courses. The method is used to produce a mock-rib top and selvage of a stocking. Only needles which take the elastic yarn in their hooks and which knit at every course, are provided with jacks 18. Such needles are raised, by jack cam 30, to clear and to take inelastic yarn 11 ; and, by jack cam 31, to take elastic yarn 1 at a height less than clearing height, from a feeder 35, which may be moved into and out of action, a cam 32 then drawing them down. The other needles also take yarn 11, but clear only when a cam 25 is moved inwardly. Specification 548,951 is referred to.
