Abstract

In. knitting a stocking having a roll welt the transfer of the held course of loops to needles is begun at a point spaced circumferentially from the first stitch of the stocking. The dial of the machine includes two bolt cams 28, 34 depending into the transfer bitt butt track 26 to force the bits into and out of the needle circle respectively. The needles comprise two groups of consecutive needles having long and short butts 60, 62 respectively. Alternate, even, needles cooperate with transfer bitts. The long butt needles cooperate with short butt transfer bitts, and vice versa. The first course of the stocking is knit on odd needles only, with cam 68 acting on butts 66 of odd jacks 64. During the second half of the course cam 74 is inserted so that during the next revolution all needles take yarn, which the even needles hold until welt courses are begun, and the dial bolt cams are inserted. During the third revolution the transfer bitts are projected by the cam 28 whose operation with that of cam 34 has been so arranged during the previous course that the short butt group preceeding the long butt group, and odd needles only take yarn. Thus a loop is formed between alternate needles, extending across and held by the transfer butts. The first loop of the held course is at substantially the same circumferential location as the first stitch of the stocking. On the revolution following the welt courses, knitted on all needles, the even needles are raised before the knitting station so that they can take the held loops. On this revolution the bolt cams are inserted while the short butts pass so that projection of the long butt transfer bitts to transfer loops occurs half way through the revolution. Commencement of the transfer is thereby spaced circumferentially from the commencement of the stocking, viz at the opposite side of the cylinder from needle 1.
