Abstract

1,058,103. Fluorescent discharge lamps. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. July 13, 1964 [July 12, 1963], No. 28773/64. Heading H1D. A window extending in width over a minor portion of the periphery and limited in length to the part of the lamp between the electrodes is provided in an internal coating of a reflector fluorescent lamp envelope containing mercury vapour and an inert gas at a low pressure. The coating may comprise a reflective layer of titanium dioxide or zirconia covering the whole interior of the envelope apart from the window and covered by a phosphor layer, e.g. calcium halophosphate activated with manganese and antimony, which may or may not also cover the window. Alternatively the reflective layer may be omitted, the phosphor coating being made sufficiently thick to provide a screen which is reflective to visible light except for the area forming the window where the phosphor coating is either thin or absent. The window may extend over a peripheral angle of from 20 degrees to 90 degrees. Curves (Fig. 4, not shown) illustrate the effect of different window lengths on the lamp brightness. The filling may be argon or a mixture of argon and neon or helium at a pressure of a few mm. of Hg. with sufficient mercury to provide a vapour pressure of a few microns in operation.
