Abstract

1,056,519. Mechanical seals. MORGANITE CARBON Ltd. June 9, 1965 [July 9, 1964], No. 28455/64. Heading F2B. In a rotary shaft seal comprising a sealing member of resilient material having a body portion 1 secured to the shaft and a continuously outwardly flaring skirt portion 2 having at its free end an edge 3 that makes sealing line contact with an annular counterface, either the edge 3 is non-circular and the sealing member is concentrically mounted on the shaft or the edge 3 is circular and the sealing member is eccentrically mounted on the shaft. The sealing member may be of natural or synthetic rubber or, preferably, butadiene acrylonitrile copolymer and the body portion 1 is reinforced by a spring 4. The term " non-circular " is defined in the Specification as including any continuous line other than a circle that is everywhere outwardly convex and a closed loop having one or more discontinuities, the portions between which are straight or outwardly convex and the angles formed by adjoining portions at the discontinuities being not less than 120 degrees, e.g. straight-sided polygons of six or more sides. Preferably, the edge 3 is elliptical or, alternatively, a continuously arcuate line having three or four peaks.
