Abstract

1275581 Shaft seal COOPER ROLLER BEARINGS CO Ltd 12 Oct 1970 [20 Oct 1969] 51354/69 Heading F2B A shaft seal comprises an annular body 1 of resilient material surrounded by a split ring 3 having interlocking ends 13, 14. The body 1 is of H-section having two outer flanges 4, 5 and two inner flanges 7, 8. The ring 3 is split and is located in a groove 9 in the body 1 between the flanges 4, 5; protrusions 10, 11 on the body engaging a recess 12 in the ring 3. In use, the body 1 is first located on the shaft and the ring 3 is then positioned in the groove 9 and the ends 13, 14 forced over each other to engage flat surfaces 17, 18 whereby the body 1 is frictionally held on the shaft to rotate therewith. The flanges 4, 5 and the ring 3 sealingly co-operate with the shaft housing. The body 1 may be of natural or synthetic rubber and the split ring 3 may be of steel, aluminium or synthetic plastics.
