Abstract

1,042,181. Hinges. C. R. HAMMERSTEIN. March 1, 1963, No. 8243/63. Heading E2F. A hinge for the adjustable backrest of a seat comprises a pair of hinge plates 11, 12 mounted on a common spindle 90 and means for locking the hinge in a desired position of adjustment, the locking means comprising interengageable locking elements 81, 83 relatively axially displaceable with respect to the common spindle, a control member 85 angularly displaceable about the common spindle, and cam means 86 carried by the control member so that when the control member is angularly displaced the locking elements are moved into and out of engagement to lock and release the hinge. In the embodiment shown, the element 83 is rigidly secured to the hinge plate 12 and has teeth 102, and the element 81 is slidable axially on the spindle 90 against the action of a spring 94 and has three toothed segments 97 which project through curved slots 82 in the hinge plate 11 to engage with the teeth 102. The control member 85, which is rotatable by means of a lever 84 (not shown), has cam projections 86 which fit into corresponding recesses in the element 81 when the teeth are disengaged. When the member 85 is rotated, the projections 86 leave the recesses and force the element 81 to move axially into engagement with the element 83. A return spring 93 urges the backrest towards the upright position. In a modification, Fig. 11 (not shown), the element 81 is disposed between the hinge plates 11 and 12 and has rearwardly extending projections 107 engaging slots in the plate 11. In a further modification, Figs. 1 and 2 (not shown), the hinge plate 12 has teeth 73 adapted to co-operate with teeth on a plate 64 which is axially displaceable but non-rotatable relative to the hinge plate 11. Hemispherical recesses 65 are formed in the plate 64 and are adapted to receive balls 66 of larger diameter which are disposed between the plate 64 and the hinge plate 12 and are held captive in apertures 68 in a flat plate 67 constituting the control member. Rotation of the plate 67 forces the balls to leave the recesses 65 and thereby moves the plate 64 away from the hinge plate 12 to free the hinge. In another modification, Fig. 12 (not shown) the locking elements and, if desired, the hinge plates are made of plastics material.
