Abstract

1370793 Rolling mills WEAN UNTTED Inc 21 Jan 1972 [25 Feb 1971] 5436/71 Heading B3M The working rolls 14, 15 of a rolling mill have chocks 19, 23 at the drive side which can be spaced from each other one on each side of the mill passline during a roll changing operation and chocks 18, 22 at the other side so, arranged that one 22 is received within the other 18. The arrangement permits the working rolls 14, 15 of a stand to be changed whilst the strip being rolled remains in a cold rolling tandem mill. The rolls are changed by lowering a lower back up roll 17 by piston-cylinder assemblies 28 to enable wheels 40 on the chock 22 and wheels 58 on the chock 23 of the lower work roll 15 to be lowered until they engage tracks 47 fixed to and extending between a pair of chock receiving housings 10, 11. An upper back up roll 16 is raised by lifting screws 26 and removing blocks 27 to cause wheels 45 on the chock 18 and wheels 53 on the chock 19 of the upper work roll 14 to engage tracks formed by tracks 44 and 56 connected to the chocks 24 of the upper back up roll 16 and tracks 54 pivotally connected to and extending between the chocks 24. The rolls 14, 15 are moved along the tracks by a ram 83 coupled to the chock 23 on to a carriage 34 of a movable car 71. When the rolls are moved out of the roll stand, the tracks 47 are engaged by wheels 46 on the chock 18, which wheels 46 are normally aligned with apertures 63 in the tracks 47 during a rolling operation.
