[Also in Division D1] A sewing machine is provided with a clutch control operated from a treadle which has three operative positions and which provides a full speed drive to the needle, stops the needle in the lower position through a low speed drive and stops the needle in the upper position from the lower position through a low speed drive. With the treadle 5 in the forward position the coupling disc 10 engages the disc 6 on motor shaft 2 and the machine is driven at full speed and a drive member 15 engages a coupling disc 19 to drive the worm 14 and a worm-wheel 8 which rotates freely on a shaft 9. On return of the treadle to the central or rest position the coupling disc 10 is disengaged from the disc 6 and engages friction disc 7 but the relay 36 remains energized and the needle is driven slowly through the worm and the needle stops with the needle in the lowest position when the contact 33 leaves the contact strip 29 on switch drum 24 mounted on the machine shaft 3. If the treadle is then pressed rearwardly the machine again moves forward at low speed until the needle is in its upper position where it again stops as the contact 32 leaves the contact strip 28.
