Abstract

1,111,339. Overload release clutches. FISHOLOW PRODUCTS Ltd. 28 July, 1965 [30 July, 1964; 16 March, 1965], Nos. 36271/64 and 28276/63. Addition to 979,487. Heading F2C. [Also in Division B3] A powered tapper for cutting screw threads includes an overload clutch comprising members 13, 14 slidable on a spigot 12 of driving shank 11, the member 13 rotating with spigot 12; torque transmitting balls 17 are engaged in frustoconical openings 15a, 16a of bores 16, 15 in members 13, 14 which are biased together by spring 20. The balls in the torque transmitting positions are in the central portion of U or V or straight grooves, Figs. 3-6, not shown, in member 13 so that on overload, determined by spring 20, the balls move to one end of the grooves depending on the direction of rotation of member 13 to be clear of the openings 15a, 16a. Balls 23 in grooves 22, 24 in extension 21 of member 14 and cage 25 transmit drive from member 14 to a collet 26, connected to cage 25, and a thread cutting tool 27. Compression springs 28, 29 permit limited axial movement between collet 26 and member 14 to accommodate any error in positioning the cutting tool in relation to the work.
