Abstract
412,050. Friction ratchets ; variablespeed gearing. DURR, F., 13, Karl Freytagstrasse, Munich, Germany. July 24, 1933, No. 20879. [Classes 80 (ii) and 80 (iii).] A reversible roller ratchet-clutch for use in continuously variable-speed gearing comprises rollers 3 arranged to jam between a driving (or driven) annulus 1 and counter-rollers 4 carried in recesses in a driven (or driving) member 5, the rollers making small rotary movements at each successive jamming so as to expose fresh wearing-surfaces. For reversed driving, further jamming-rollers 2 are provided and are normally held out of engagement with the counter-rollers 4 by pegs 8 projecting axially from a disc and normally urged in the anticlockwise direction by a spring 10, Fig. 5 not shown, and having a frictional connection with the driven-member 5 which is stronger than the spring, so that the disc can be turned clockwise to assume a position in which the pegs 8 hold off the forward-rollers 3 and allow the reverse-rollers 2 to engage the counterrollers 4. Compression-springs 19 are arranged between the rollers 2, 3, which latter are journalled with play in discs 18 on each side of the member 5. Variable-speed ratchet gearing shown in Figs. 6 and 7 uses several members such as 5, Fig. 1, associated with oscillating arms 14, and the outer annuli such as 1, Fig. 1, are formed as gear-wheels 1<a>, all meshing with a single pinion on the driven-shaft. The free-ends of the arms 14 are provided with rollers engaging an annular groove in a plate 15 rotating with the driving-shaft, which latter carries an axially movably square sleeve 16, having an inclined key 17 engaging a keyway in a rectangular opening in the plate 15. Axial movement of the sleeve 16 causes radial movement of the plate 15 and so varies the throw of the levers 14.
