Abstract
1,028,136. Flexible hull vessels for liquid cargoes. J. J. C. GARATE. Feb. 27, 1964, No. 8216/64. Headings B7A and B7S. A vessel for transporting liquid cargoes has that part of the hull carrying the cargo provided with an outer skin 3 (Fig. 1, not shown) having zero or very small buoyancy, the outside water being free to enter to direct inward pressure on a flexible membrane 5 accommodating the cargo for transport at a pressure at least equal to that of the outside water, the buoyancy of the vessel being concentrated in a small forecastle (Fig. 7, not shown) and a small quarter-deck, whereby the longitudinal bending moment and hence the necessary thickness of the structure of the vessel are reduced. The skin 3 is provided with holes for the flow of sea water and can have a light framing 4 providing buoyancy spaces to give the skin a displacement equal to its weight. The hull comprises sections 10 coupled at 11 to allow torsional deformation of the skin. The coupling is provided by a split tube 12 (Fig. 9, not shown).
