Abstract

1,025,944. Vacuum switches. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. Jan. 22, 1963 [Jan. 24, 1962; May 18, 1962], No. 18935/65. Divided out of 1,025,943. Heading H2B. A vacuum switch comprises an evacuated envelope constructed in part of insulating material, a pair of electrode supporting rods, a pair of electrodes having radially projecting portions to prevent arcs wandering on to the rods, and metal vapour condensing shielding surrounding the electrodes and interposed in all straight line paths leading from the arcing regions of the electrodes to the insulating material. The arcing regions of the electrodes consist substantially of a metal selected from the group consisting of aluminium, beryllium, magnesium or combinations thereof, the metal being free of gases and gas-forming contaminants to an extent specified. The arcing regions may include small amounts of other metals which act as weld inhibitors, reference being made to the use of up to 20% by weight of copper or silver.
