Abstract

1,018,789. Packaging-machines. OLIN MATHIESON CHEMICAL CORPORATION. Sept. 25, 1963 [Oct. 1, 1962], No. 37785/63. Heading B8C. [Also in Division B6] An apparatus for transferring wrapper blanks from a hopper to groups of articles comprises a first conveyer means for continuously moving groups of articles through a packing machine, a second conveyer to individually transfer the wrapper blanks from the hopper on to the group of articles, vacuum means mounted adjacent the hopper for transferring the blanks from the hopper on to the second conveyer means, and means adjacent the second conveyer for guiding the wrapper blanks from the hopper on to the group of articles. The apparatus is used to place wrap-around blanks on groups of bottles &c. to form open-ended package units. As shown, a stack of wrapper blanks 41 is held in a hopper 40 by stop members 46, 48. The second conveyer comprises chains 66 mounted on sprockets 6, 7 (not shown) and 64. Arms 22 are raised towards the hopper by cam means 16, 27 to engage suction cups 24 with the lowermost blank. A vacuum control plate 31 on the arms moves out of engagement with a plunger 34 thus operating a valve 26 which brings the cups 24 into communication with the vacuum pump 26A. As the arms move away from the hopper with a blank the plate 31 reengages the plunger 34 disengaging the cups from the vacuum supply. The blank is then deposited on the chains 66, advanced by lugs 67 and guided around the sprockets 6 by guide plates 8 with flanges 10 into a position directly over a group of articles.
