[Also in Group XVII] In a machine for decorating bottles (see Group XVII) filled crates are fed in succession by an endless chain conveyer 15 and pass on to a second chain conveyer 16 driven at a higher speed so as to produce a space between adjacent crates, each crate being temporarily arrested by a stop 38 while the bottles are removed. The emptied crates pass on to a discharge conveyer 18. The stop 38 and a second stop 38a, which holds back the following crate, are carried by a member 37 which is raised periodically by a cam 77. The bottles are deposited on a table 33 and are steadied by side guides 47 while pushers 34 on a pair of endless chains 101, driven intermittently through gearing 102-109, move them off the table on to an endless slat conveyer 35. The latter co-operates with an inclined endless belt 48 to transfer the bottles in line to an endless belt discharge conveyer 36 which is parallel to the conveyer 18. The various conveyers and cams, with the exception of the conveyers 36 and 48, are driven through chain-and-sprocket gearing by an electric motor 57. The conveyer 36 is driven from a bottlewashing machine to which the bottles are supplied and drives the belt 48 through bevel gearing 68, 69. The movement of crates on the conveyer 15 is controlled by a stop-member comprising rollers 130 on pivoted arms 129 urged upwardly by a spring (not shown). If a gap occurs in the line of crates, the member rises above the level of the conveyer to hold back the following crates until it is depressed by a lever 127 operated by a spring 131 under the control of a cam 98.
