1,016,146. Friction clutches. AUTOMOTIVE PRODUCTS CO. Ltd. Dec. 3, 1964 [Dec. 12, 1963], No. 49149/63. Heading F2C. In a multi-disc friction clutch for connecting an engine-driven flywheel 10 to a driven shaft through driven discs 21, 22 splined respectively thereon and clamped by a spring-urged pressure plate 17 and an intermediate pressure plate 18 against the flywheel 10, the intermediate pressure plate 18 is centralized on clutch disengagement, effected by the usual throw-out bearing 24 through levers 23, by springs 26 pocketed in the flywheel 10 and pressure plate 17 and seated each end of one or a number of slides 25 adjustably positioned axially, by grub screws 32, in lugs 19 on the intermediate pressure plate. Each of the cylindrical slides may be formed with a centre partitions 27 on which the springs are seated and retained by a rivet 28 (Fig. 3), or, in Fig. 4 (not shown), may be formed as a plain cylinder the ends of which are reduced to provide abutment surfaces and spigots on which the springs are seated and located. The centralizing slides and springs may be pre-set on the intermediate pressure plate in a dummy clutch assembly to ensure their correct central position in the final assembly and compensate for manufacturing tolerances of the mating clutch parts.
