In a drafting apparatus having pairs of top rollers 13 co-operating with a bottom roller 10 and upper and lower pairs of drafting belts 47, 46 the apron cradle assembly comprises a base member 34 pivotally mounted below the bottom roller 10, upstanding arms 39 on the base member, lower apron bars 44 mounted in notches 42a in the arms 39, an upper double apron bar 43 pivotally mounted in notches 42 in the arms 39 and arms 49 connected to the upper apron bar 43 by means of which the shaft 52 of the upper apron rollers 13 is located, the arrangement being such that the forward pressure exerted on the upper roll and apron unit by a lever and spring weighting device 17,18 acts through abutments 53 on the arms 49 and tends to rotate the arms 39 and so tension the lower drafting aprons 46. As shown the base member 34 of the cradle assembly has openings 38 which fit loosely over upstanding elements 32 on an adjustable bracket 24 so that the assembly may pivot about the line where a flange 35 on the member 34 contacts surfaces 35 on the bracket 24. To vary the turning moment on the arms 39 and this the tension of the lower aprons 46, the shaft engaging surface of the weighting lever 17 may either be machined at an incline or a portion having an adjustable inclination may be attached thereto.
