Abstract

1,010,311. Aerials. PHILIPS ELECTRONIC & ASSOCIATED INDUSTRIES Ltd. Jan. 16, 1963 [Jan. 19, 1962], No. 1991/63. Heading H4A. In a U.H.F. ferrite rod aerial wherein a coupling loop 2 and a part of the ferrite rod 1 are enclosed in a longitudinally split sleeve 4, the uniform capacitance existing (i.e. self capacitance) or placed across the split 5 is arranged in conjunction with the inductance of the sleeve 4 to cause the sleeve 4 to be resonant at the average operating frequency of the aerial and to provide improved matching and sensitivity. The length of the ferrite rod is at least five times greater than its diameter and between 65 and 90% of its length is enclosed by the sleeve 4. The capacitance may be provided by lipping the edges of the slit, Figs. 4 and 5. Preferably, only a single turn coupling loop is used and this may be disposed in a circumferential groove in the rod or in a gap between a two-part ferrite rod (Fig. 3, not shown). Alternatively, the coupling loop may comprise a two-wire transmission line, connected to the sleeve as shown in Fig. 4, or a coaxial cable, Fig. 5, with the outer conductor 10 connected to the sleeve 4 at a point diametrically opposite the split, and the inner conductor 11 connected to the sleeve at a point between the split and the entry point of the coaxial cable. Alternately, the feeder may be taken out through an axial hole in the ferrite rod.
