Abstract

608,506. High-frequency transmission lines. MARCONI'S WIRELESS TELEGRAPH CO., Ltd. Nov. 21, 1945, No. 31409. Convention date, July 25, 1944. Drawings to Specification. [Class 40 (iv)] [Also in Group XL (c)] An aerial array comprising a plurality of dipoles fed effectively in parallel is mounted on a metallic mast with a cylindrical longitudinal bore through which a central conductor extends coaxially; the central conductor and the wall of the bore forming the feeding transmission line. In order to avoid excitation of the line in undesirable modes, #/2 times the sum of the diameter of the bore and the diameter of the inner conductor must be less than one wavelength of the frequency of operation. Tubular spacers of insulating material are used in the line and are made half-a-wavelength long at the velocity of propogation through the insulating material in order to prevent reflection. In order to match the comparatively low impedance of the aerial array to that of the line a conductive sleeve one-quarter of the wavelength long engaging the inner conductor and cooperating with the wall of the bore to form a line section with an impedance less than that of the line is used. Owing to the impedance inversion characteristics of quarter-wave lines this section operates as a transformer to provide the desired matching.
