Abstract
Cellulosic fabrics, e.g. woven, non-woven or knitted fabrics composed wholly or partly of cotton, regenerated cellulose or cellulose derivative fibres, are creaseproofed by impregnating them with an aqueous solution containing 5-40% by weight of a salt as a swelling agent for cellulose and a cellulose cross-linking agent and then heating them at a temperature of at least 100 DEG C. Suitable swelling agents are zinc chloride or thiocyanate, lithium bromide and magnesium perchlorate. The cross linking agent may be an acetal formed from formaldehyde and diethylene glycol, dimethylolmethyl carbamate, dimethylolethylene urea, dimethylol propylene urea, dimethyloldihydroxy ethylene urea, 1, 3, dimethylol-5-hydroxyethylperhydrotriazone-2, tetramethylol melamine, water soluble etherified methylol melamine compounds, the diglycidyl ether of ethylene glycol, glyoxal, formaldehyde, glutaraldehyde, epichlorhydrin, the reaction products of pyridine with chloromethyl ethers, divinyl sulphone derivatives, tris(1-azividinyl)-phosphine oxide and 1, 6-di(ethyleneiminocarbonamide)-n hexane. The impregnating solution may also contain catalysts, e.g. oxalic or citric acid, magnesium chloride or per fluoborate, zinc fluoborate, ammonium sulphate, zinc nitrate and sodium carbonate. After impregnation the fabric may be heated at a temperature of 100 DEG -150 DEG C for 1-10 minutes or it may be dried at 50 DEG -100 DEG C before heating at a temperature of at least 100 DEG C. The fabric may then be washed and dried. Before, simultaneously with or after impregnation with the aqueous solution the fabric may be treated with a cation-active or ketene-type softener. The fabric may also be calendered after impregnation either before or after heating. Specification 504,916 is referred to.
