Abstract

1,237,554. Finishing acrylic fibre-regenerated cellulose fibre cloth. ASAHI KASEI KOGYO K.K. 27 Sept., 1968 [28 Sept., 1967], No. 46040/68. Headings D1B and D1P. Cloth made from a mixture of acrylic fibres and regenerated cellulose fibres is finished by treating it with an aqueous solution containing at least one of a caustic alkali and ammonium copper oxide to harden the cloth so that it has a softness value determined by the Clark method, details of which are given, in the range 0.04 to 0.36, and then treating it with an aqueous solution containing a crease proofing agent for cellulose fibre and a softening agent effective at least for cellulose fibre, and then baking. The acrylic fibres may be made from polyacrylonitrile or a copolymer consisting of at least 75% by weight of acrylonitrile and up to 25% by weight of an ethylenically unsaturated copolymerizable monomer, and the regenerated cellulosic fibres may be viscose rayon, cupra or polynosic fibres. The first solution applied may contain 3-30% by weight of lithium, sodium or potassium hydroxide, or ammonium copper oxide in amounts corresponding to 0.4-1.3% by weight copper and 5-20% by weight ammonia, and may also contain common salt, Glauber's salt, a surface active agent and a penetrant e.g. an alkaline lower alkyl sulphate. The cloth may be dipped into the first solution for 2 seconds to 1 minute at 5‹-37‹C, washed with water or treated with a neutralizing agent, e.g. sulphuric, hydrochloric, acetic or formic acid, washed and dried. The creaseproofing agent may be an N-methylol derivative of urea, uron, ethylene urea, propylene urea, hydroxyethylene urea, triazone, triazine or hydantoin, or a compound containing two or more epoxy or vinyl groups in the molecule, and may be applied together with an acid catalyst e.g. magnesium chloride or zinc nitrate. The softening agent may be a polyolefin, polyoxyolefin, amine or quaternary ammonium salt. The cloth may be dipped into the second solution which may also contain a water repellent agent or oil repellent agent, dried at 60‹-120‹C for 1-5 minutes and heated at 100‹-160‹C for 1-5 minutes. The cloth may be dyed prior to or during the treatment with disperse dyes, cationic dyes and direct dyes.
