Abstract

The fireplace has a hollow rectangular base with an inlet for outside air and a damper to regulate the flow. A vertical shaft from the base runs at the back of the fire to a heat exchanger hood above the fire. This has tubes for the fresh air running across the rectangular flue passage. The fresh air is discharged into the room at the front of the heat exchanger above the fire. A damper in the flue above the heat exchanger is closed when the fire is out. The construction is airtight so that the fresh air does not pick up soot or smoke.
