Abstract

The ball joint may be used on track rod (1) ends for automobile steering gear etc. utilising a synthetic low friction cage (3) which is designed to accommodate fabrication tolerance. A cylindrical sleeve (2) contains the cage (3) and ball (11), having a chamfered inward end flange (8) which locates the neck of the rod, and having a cover disc (5) crimped (10) onto its opposite end. A deformable elastomer washer (4) interposes the cage and the cover, and the cage is in two pieces connected by a slender 'V' section diaphragm (6). The two pieces define a joint on the ball dia. which is normal to the rod (1) axis, the arrangement allowing the cage to adopt to balls of nominally varying dias. In addn. the washer may have a triangular section rib which enters a reciprocal groove in the base of the cage.
