Abstract

A soln of a polymer in a hydrocarbon solvent is prepared by (a) subjecting a finely particulate polymer dispersed in an aqs. medium to a separator process whereby most of the aqs. medium is removed; (b) adding a hydrocarbon solvent to the polymer and mixing it therewith; (c) transferring the mixture into a dissolution means where it is stirred and opt. heated at a slightly elevated temp. to form rapidly the soln. of polymer in the solvent, the soln. also contg. water in dispersion. Used for thermoplastic polymers including homo- and copolymers of 2-6C poly-alpha-olefin, PVC, polyvinylidene chloride and copolymers contg. a predominant amt. of vinyl chloride or vinylidene chloride, for rubbery polymer of styrene and a conjugated diolefin, 4-6C conjugated diolefin polymers, ethylene polymers, etc.
