Abstract

An elastomer (including ethylene-propylene terpolymers) is dissolved in an organic solvent by a process which comprises simultaneously: Subjecting the elastomer in particulate form and while suspended in the organic solvent to compressive and shearing actions that distort and mangle the elastomer particles and extend the surface area thereof; Subjecting the surfaces of the elastomer particles to the scrubbing action of streams of solvent in rapid movement with respect to said elastomer particles, thereby stripping from the particle surfaces the gelatinous layer formed by absorption of solvent; and Subjecting said stripped-away gelatinous layer to mangling, disintegrating actions to dissolve it in the solvent. The particulate elastomer may be in dry form, or in wet crumb form in which case a water emulsion of elastomer is produced which may be broken to recover a water-free solution. The process is preferably carried out by feeding a suspension of elastomer particles in solvent continuously through a rotary gear pump.
