Abstract

Billets are made by feeding a slab through a row of grooved rolls so several passes are employed to obtain billets which are connected together by longitudinal webs; and further rolling is used to separate the billets from each other. When the thickness(t) of the webs is reduced to a dimension which is 0.01-0.3 times the depth of the roll grooves, the grooves are used to apply a force in a direction(c) which is at an angle other than 90 degrees w.r.t. the roll axis; and the force applied to one billet causes sepn. from the adjacent billet along the web. Force may subsequently be applied in the opposite direction to direction(d), and the two forces repeated until sepn. of the billets is complete. Used in mfr. billets of ferrous - or nonferrous- metals. A continuous casing plant can be combined with rolling mills, for the continuous, automatic prodn. of billets at low cost.
