Abstract
The method is for automatically holding an object such as a boat in a shallow channel on course using two alternating out of phase magnetic fields and suitable onboard detection equipment, and is relatively insensitive to signal amplitude variations. Two long electromagnetic loops (16, 17) are laid along the required path or course of the boat (15), on the bed of channel, to produce overlapping magnetic fields, out of place by 90 degrees when driven with suitable power amplifiers and transformers (41, 42). A power saving link of capacitances (43, 44) and resistances (45, 46) between the loops is also used. On the boat, two detection coils (11, 12) mounted at right angles, detect the overlapped alternating fields and produce signals amplified, (27, 28), fed to a phase detector (31) and used to drive a motor (33) attached to the boat rudder.
