Abstract
An underground cable locator, which enables the simultaneous determination of cable position and direction, has a first inductive pick-up system including a coil 13 together with circuitry 26, 27, 29 i.e. squarer, phase comparator and drive amplifier, and an indicator 28, arranged to show when the coil 13 is aligned parallel with the underground cable. The locator also has a second inductive pick-up system including two coils 11 and 12 with associated circuitry 16, 17, 18 i.e. rectifiers and differential amplifier and an indicator 19, arranged to show the direction in which the locator must be moved in order to be over the underground cable. In an alternative embodiment the circuit of the second inductive system includes a single amplifier chain and the outputs of the two coils are applied to the amplifier chain by time multiplexing. <IMAGE>
