Abstract
The compressor rotor (15) is turned by the turbine impeller (16). The turbine impeller is under dimensioned and incapable of producing the required driving force. A second working turbine impeller (17) produces not only working output (18) but also provides the additional energy required to turn the compressor rotor. The additional energy is transferred to the compressor by a first gear train (19) a free wheel coupling (20) and an infinitely variable gear (21). A second gear train (22) connects the variable gear (21) with the compressor rotor shaft. Variable pitch guide vanes (23) are provided between the two turbine impellers (16,17).
