Abstract

630,164. Reversible gas turbine. POWER JETS (RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT), Ltd., and CONSTANT, H. March 18, 1947, No. 7464. [Class 110(iii)] The useful-power turbine of a gas turbine plant for shippropulsion is of the inward radial flow type and is reversed by means of pivoted guide vanes. In one form, the turbine casing has eight inlets 3 and the gas is directed on to the rotor, which has radial vanes, by pivoted reversing guide vanes 4. In another form, the casing has a single inlet and the gas is directed in one direction or the other in a swirl around the casing by a single guide vane. The axial outlet has swirl-extracting exit vanes. The reversing guide vanes, the exit vanes and the trailing edges of the rotor vanes may be suitably curved to provide for a greater power in the forward direction.
