Abstract

A branch pipe assembly has flanges (1) and (2) bolted together to clamp the jaws (8) and (9) around the main water pipe (10). Each jaw (8), (9) has a semi-cylindrical extension to receive the saddle shaped sealing member (17) which is pressed against the pipe (10). A fitting (19) containing a valve (24) is screwed into the flange (4). A drill (29) is pushed into the central hole of the fitting and is used to drill a hole in the wall of the pipe (10). The drill is withdrawn and water from the pipe (10) is allowed to flow for a sufficient time in order the clear out the drilling swarf and the hole (20) is sealed off by screwing in the plugs (27) and (28).
