Abstract

1498263 Drilling and tapping pipes A J M KAGAN 31 Jan 1975 [18 Feb 1974 13 Dec 1974] 4381/75 Heading B3C [Also in Division F2] A device for tapping a pipeline to form a side branch comprises a body member 11 adapted at one end via clamping elements 14, 15 for securing to a pipeline and at a second end for securing to a branch pipe; the body having a passageway 12 wherein a tubular saw-toothed poriton of a rotatable tool 20 is received to contact the pipeline and bore a communication hole therein. The body member may include a plug cock 31 (Fig. 1) and flanged saddle clamps 14, 15 exhibit stepped portions 26, 27 to accommodate a range of pipe sizes. A cradle member 30 having a sealing member 28 wherein the drill portion is received effects sealing of the junction, and the tubular drill portion of the tool-preferably of steel, is configured with an inner cylindrical and outer frusto-conical surface or vice-versa and bevelled teeth to ensure that the drilling pellet is returned within the tool. An alternative embodiment (not shown) differs in that a stopcock is not formed integral with the body, but is a separate member incorporating a drilling portion of the tool described and adapted to be screwed into the body to provide for a side branch.
