Abstract

The engine cylinder (1) houses the main piston (2) with a connecting rod (7), crankpin (8) and crankshaft (6). A secondary piston (3) is installed in the upper part of the cylinder (11) and actuated by a cam (4) driven by a chain (9) from the valve camshaft (5). The motion of the secondary piston is so controlled that the maximum compression between the two pistons occurs when the piston (2) is well past top dead centre and can exert the maximum torque on the crankshaft (6). In alternative designs passageways are provided in the secondary piston (3) with the valves fitted wither in the upper cylinder (11) or in the secondary piston (3) itself.
