Abstract

A marine propulsion system has a cone shaped turbine (2) rotating about a vertical axis. Three spirals which act as scoops for the water are housed inside an open bottomed chamber which tapers inwards below the turbine, then tapers outwards to a channel (3) around its upper spiral so that water is compressed then forced ut through a narrow chamber (4) at the rear. The number of spirals is restricted to three to reduce turbulence. A rudder (9) is located in the outlet from the discharge chamber (14), and a hood (11) can be lowered over the outlet from the chamber. The turbine may be driven by an overhead bevel gear arrangement.
