Abstract

The ship has a vertical intake duct which branches into two horizontal lateral ducts, arranged in the form of a T. The horizontal ducts are below the waterline. The vertical duct contains an impeller, rotated by drive means arranged above the T. at the point where the horizontal ducts branch off, there are adjustable guide vanes which direct all or part of the flow of water produced by the impeller to either the starboard or port side thus providing lateral propulsion. The guide van assembly may be adjusted by rotation about the centre line of the impeller. Further adjustable vanes may be provided at the outlets of the lateral ducts, to obtain a forward or rearward propulsion component.
