Title compounds are of formula (I): (where R1 and R2=CH3O- or together form -O-CH2-O-; R3 and R4=H or a bond; R5=lower alkyl, lower alkoxy or allyl but when R1 and R2=CH3O-, and R3 and R4 =H then R5 is not = CH3. They are prepd. by heating the appropriate 13-substd. berberine salt, opt. in the presence of an org. base.
