Cpds of formula (I): (where R is F, Cl or 1-4C alkoxy; R1 is H, F or Cl; provided that R1 is not = H when R is 4-Cl) are prepd. by (a) hydrolysing a cpd (II): (where (i) R2 is 1-4C alkoxy and R3 is H or 2-4C alkanoyl, or (ii) R2 is di(1-4C alkyl)amino and R3 is H or CHO); or (b) reacting a cpd (III): with HCOOR5 (where R5 is 1-4C alkyl) in the presence of a strong base.
