Abstract

Polymers containing 85% or more of acrylonitrile are wet-spun from a spinning solution in dimethylformamide containing at least 10% by weight, based on the dimethylformamide, of cyclohexanone, into a coagulating bath of water, dimethylformamide and at least 10% by weight of cyclohexanone, based on the dimethylformamide. The spinning solution may contain 10-40% by weight cyclohexanone, and the coagulating bath 10-65% by weight cyclohexanone, based on the dimethylformamide contents. Desirably, the weight ratio of cyclohexanone to dimethylformamide in the coagulating bath is the same as that in the spinning solution. Filaments so made show, in the as-spun state, fewer cavities perpendicular to the surface and, when drawn, fewer longitudinal fissures and less fibrillation than conventional filaments.
