Abstract

An acrylonitrile polymer, containing, if desired, a copolymer of vinyl compounds, is dissolved in 70-75% by weight sulphuric acid and the resulting solution wet-spun into a precipitating bath containing 48-56% by weight sulphuric acid. Specified vinyl compounds, which should not be present in amounts exceeding 15% of the polymer, are vinyl pyridine, vinyl acetate and methacrylic acid. Desirably the precipitating bath contains 50-55% by weight sulphuric acid and is maintained at 15-20 DEG C. In an example, a 10% polyacrylonitrile solution is wet-spun into such a bath, washed, stretched in a boiling water bath, dried, cut and shrunk to form staple fibres.
