Abstract

A mixture of trioxane and a resinous binder is shaped into a filament or film and then polymerized by contact with a gaseous or dissolved catalyst comprising boron fluoride or a boron fluoride-containing compound. The resinous binder may be washed out from the product by solvent treatment. Suitable resinous binders are polyvinyl acetate, polystyrene, polyvinyl chloride, polymethylmethacrylate, polyvinyl pyrrolidone, polyethylacrylate, polyvinyl caprolactam, polyamides, polyesters, cellulose acetate and ethyl cellulose used in amount from 5 to 50% of the trioxane. The mixture may be melt spun or wet spun. In Examples (1) a solution of polyvinyl acetate in trioxane is extruded and polymerized under nitrogen, using boron trifluoride and (2) a solution of polyacetaldehyde in trioxane is formed into strands and polymerized with boron trifluoride.
