Abstract

Compositions for making cores and moulds consist principally of sand and as a binder therefor a liquid aminoplastic resin which is obtained by reacting together urea, formaldehyde and furfuryl alcohol in the mol. ratios of 1-2 to 1-2 to 1-4. The compositions may also contain an acidic accelerator, e.g. phosphoric acid, sulphuric acid, hydrochloric acid, ammonium phosphate, ammonium chloride, sodium bisulphate or a mixture of sodium bisulphate and glycollic acid. The urea, formaldehyde and furfuryl alcohol may have been reacted together in the presence of a condensing agent, e.g. diethylenetriamine, an alkali metal hydroxide, ammonium hydroxide or calcium hydroxide. In the example, the preparation of a binder from urea, formaldehyde, furfuryl alcohol and diethylenetriamine is described.
