Abstract

Compositions for making foundry moulds and cores comprise sand, and an aqueous solution of urea and formaldehyde. The proportion of urea to formaldehyde is in the mole ratio of 1:2 to 2,6, the urea and formaldehyde together are present in a proportion of 0,5 to 3,0% by weight of the sand and the water is present in a proportion of 1,5 to 3,5% by weight of the mixture. Optional additives include mould release agents such as naphthalene, chlorinated naphthalene and camphor which may be dissolved in kerosene and green strength additives such as cereal flours, bentonite clays, silica flour and fly ash. Curing agents, e.g. ammonium chloride, ammonium sulphate and oxalic acid may also be included.
