Abstract
A mouldable resin is made by mixing a monohydric phenol and/or urea with formalin, adding an alkali metal salt containing an amphoteric element in the acid component (e.g. sodium silicate, zincate or aluminate) to obtain a gel, and submitting the gel to the action of infra-red rays until the desired degree of polycondensation is obtained. The salt may form an integral part of the resulting resin. The infra-red rays may be derived from lamps, gas burners or heated metallic elements. In examples: (1) a mixture of formalin, phenol and cresol is added to sodium silicate solution and the mixture stirred to produce a gel which is converted into a solid mass by infra-red rays; the product is mixed with saw-dust, rice-husks, talcum or quartz, zinc or aluminium stearate and dibutyl phthalate and is then moulded; (2) a mixture of formalin and urea is adjusted to pH7.5 with ammonia and allowed to stand; sodium silicate solution is then added to produce a gel which is hardened by infra-red rays; then saw-dust, zinc stearate, zinc oxidie, pentaerythritol, hexamethylene tetramine and ethyl alcohol is added and the mixture left to dry to form a moulding composition; (3) similar to Example 2, but using a mixture of urea, formalin and phenol.
