Definitions
- the invention relates to the technical field of oil sump for thermal engines of motor vehicles in particular.
- Aluminum and sheet metal hybrid oil pans are known, that is to say having a lower tray in relatively flat sheet and a complementary aluminum sole supporting the tray and attached to the engine. These housings can support vehicle components, such as the gearbox or the air conditioning compressor.
- a hybrid engine oil sump of a motor vehicle whose plastic tank is attached to a lightweight metal soleplate, the tray being intended to contain the engine oil in a relatively flat configuration and the sole being configured in a complementary manner in connection with the motor, namely substantially parallelepiped rectangle.
- These housings can support vehicle components, such as the gearbox, and are lighter than the aluminum and sheet metal housings described above.
- This soleplate is intended to be attached to the engine on the one hand and to the sump of the oil sump on the other hand, and is shaped to further support vehicle members.
- This sole has a lower support edge sealing junction with a complementary support edge of the tray.
- the sealing junction support edge of the sole comprises at least one wide notch in at least one side wall of the sole.
- the sole is perforated relative to the soles of the prior art, which have a substantially flat bottom support edge.
- the lower bearing edge of the sole extends in all three dimensions, and not in a plane as in the prior art.
- the sole can thus be reduced at least in part to a simple frame, of relatively low weight.
- the sole may have upper and lower parts, the lower parts corresponding to particular constraints related to the features of the sole.
- a lower part may be provided to support a body of the type of distribution casing.
- Such a sole is thus shaped as a belt of the lower part of the engine or bottom of the engine, with a geometry that fits the bottom of the engine, has less material than a conventional housing sump, substantially parallelepiped rectangle, and therefore the oil pan is lightened relative to a conventional oil sump.
- the sole and the tray thus have complementary shapes, and fit one into the other to form the housing.
- the support edge of the sole and the bearing edge of the tray may extend over the entire periphery respectively of the sole and the tray.
- Each large notch also called notch in the present application, may occupy all or part of one side of the sole, or even several adjacent sides of the sole.
- the side wall of the sole corresponding to a given side may have one or more indentations.
- notch in a wall of the sole is meant that the wall is cut with a large variation of the lower bearing edge of the wall relative to a lower edge which would be substantially plane.
- the height of the cut may be 5% or more of the maximum height of the walls of the sole, preferably 15% or more, preferably 30% or more, and preferably 50% or more.
- vehicle member means the members that can be supported at least in part by the housing, such as the gearbox, the timing case or the air conditioning compressor.
- the gravity vector is a vertical vector, perpendicular to the horizontal planes, and going from top to bottom.
- This soleplate may advantageously comprise the attachment parts of the oil sump to the engine, in particular at the bottom of the engine.
- This soleplate may thus advantageously comprise at least one reinforcing plate for supporting the heavy part of the vehicle, for example a front plate or a rear plate, adapted to support an engine timing case, a compressor or a vehicle gearbox.
- a tray for an engine oil sump this tray being intended to contain oil and to be attached to a soleplate arranged to be itself attached to the engine and to support moreover at least a vehicle member.
- the tray is characterized in that its upper bearing edge, intended to form a sealed junction with a lower bearing edge of the sole, comprises at least one wide notch in at least one side wall of the tray.
- This tray therefore has walls higher than others, and can form with the sole described above a relatively lightweight hybrid oil sump.
- Each recess can occupy all or part of one side of the tray, or even several adjacent sides of the tray.
- the side wall of the tray corresponding to a given side may have one or more indentations.
- the walls can therefore in some places have heights below the nominal level of the oil, once the oil sump assembled under the engine block and filled.
- nominal level is meant that the oil level is between a minimum and a maximum prescribed by the manufacturer.
- the housing is thus shaped to receive a quantity of oil such that at least a portion of the complementary sealing edge sealing junction of the tray is located below the oil level contained in the housing.
- the tray may be advantageously shaped with a plastic shell, which further lightens the tray relative to a sheet metal tray.
- the plastic material constituting the shell may be a conventional polyamide but may be loaded with glass fibers, carbon fibers or the like to increase its mechanical strength.
- the shell is advantageously molded.
- the shell may advantageously comprise at least part of the components associated with the treatment of the oil formed in one piece with the shell, such as oil circuit conduits and treatment members for circulation, decantation, filtration or the cooling of the oil, for example ducts of the circuit oil supply with integrated oil pump, oil filter circuit conduits with oil filter support element, oil settling circuit conduits with settling chambers, circuit heat exchanger etc.
- the plastic shell may thus comprise, in addition to a part of the oil tank itself, extension parts in one piece with the shell, adapted to receive or at least partly constitute components associated with the treatment of the oil, for example, the oil circuit lines to the oil feed pump, the oil decantation circuit lines, the oil filter lines, the oil circuit lines to the exchanger etc., but also some of the parts of the associated components, for example the oil pump, the oil settling chambers and component support parts, while also ensuring the sealing of the various interfaces, such as by example the support element of the oil filter.
- the shell may comprise an inner surface and an outer surface, the inner surface being the one intended to at least partially come into contact with the oil.
- the plastic shell is advantageously shaped according to a ribbed or grooved geometry, the outer surface being advantageously honeycombed. These geometries can make it possible to give the shell rigidity and solidity, for example for performances of acoustic silence during engine operation. (lack of response to vibrations), and resistance to road shocks, rock shocks, sidewalks, etc.
- the ribbing described above may advantageously be performed on the vertical or near periphery surface (relative to the direction of mounting on the engine) of the wall of the shell.
- This ribbing or grooving may comprise regular undulating surface ripples.
- the housing may advantageously be a hybrid oil sump, that is to say that the tray and the sole are made of different materials.
- the tray can be made of a material lighter than that of the sole, and the sole is made of a stronger material than that of the tray.
- the sole may be aluminum or aluminum alloy, while the tray may be plastic.
- the housing may advantageously comprise an elastomer seal disposed between the sole and the tray.
- This seal extends sealingly between the upper bearing edge of the tray and the lower bearing edge of the sole. This seal can be used to seal the assembly of the entire tank and the sole of the housing when the latter is attached to the engine.
- This seal also allows its cutting geometry in the space (not flat) to reduce the vibration of the housing device to the operation of the engine.
- the seal is placed above or below the oil level in the tray to maximize the use of plastic for weight gain.
- the invention is in no way limited by the shape of the joint profile, nor by the material or materials used.
- the seal may for example have a T-shaped profile, or other.
- the seal may be made of silicone elastomer, for example linear poly (dimethylsiloxane) or PDMS, and / or one or more other material (x).
- the support edges of the tray and / or the sole in contact with the elastomer seal may be left untreated, gross casting for the tray and raw casting for the sole.
- the plastic body of the tray body and the flexible elastomer seal absorb imperfections from the edge surfaces in contact with the seal. As a result, the machining of these surfaces, as in conventional hybrid oil sump, may be optional.
- a motor vehicle engine comprising an oil pan as described above.
- a method of using the housing described above is proposed.
- the method may advantageously comprise a step of partial filling of the housing with a sufficient amount of oil so that at least part of the complementary support edge sealing junction of the tray is located below the oil level contained in the housing.
- FIG. 1 is an exploded perspective view of an example of a hybrid oil sump according to one embodiment of the invention.
- FIG. 2 is a perspective view of the oil sump of Figure 1 mounted.
- the oil sump 1 shown has a lower tray 2 (relative to the direction of assembly) adapted to contain engine oil and an upper metal sole 5 to be fixed to the lower part (bottom motor) not shown of a motor vehicle heat engine.
- the lower tray 2 comprises a shell 3, resulting from molding plastic, polyamide for example. This material withstands the high temperature of the oil at engine operation, from 100 to 140 ° C.
- the shell 3 comprises a container proper 7 containing the engine oil and extension parts 9 also derived from molding, able to receive or constitute components associated with the crankcase in the treatment of the oil, for example a fuel system.
- oil duct 1 1 disposed adjacent to the tank 7 and having ducts 13 conveying the oil to an oil water heat exchanger 15.
- an oil filter bell 17 by a filter feed duct molded into the body (not shown), an oil filter valve 19 by a molded support portion (not shown) , an oil level probe 21 in the tray by a molded support portion 22, an oil drain plug by a molded support portion (not shown), an oil pump control connector 23 by a molded support portion (24) etc.
- the shell 3 is ribbed on its vertical and horizontal peripheral wall surface, which increases its rigidity, its resistance to shocks of stones and pavement for example, and allows an acoustic silence to the operation of the engine.
- the shell 3 has an inner surface in contact with the oil and an outer surface.
- the shell 3 may have on its outer surface a network of cells to increase the impact resistance and also improve the acoustic silence.
- an upper bearing edge 37 of the tray extends in high stance relative to a lower bearing edge 40 so as to form two cuts in the two opposite walls of greater length, which are formed in notch 42 relative to the cutouts 40 of the opposite walls of smaller length.
- the walls of the tray are openwork.
- the upper sole 5 is lightweight metal, resulting from aluminum molding for example.
- This sole 5 is shaped complementary to the tray 2, as a connecting belt between the lower or lower part of the engine and the tray 2, extending at the periphery of the bottom of the engine.
- a lower bearing edge 35 of the sole has a shape substantially identical to that of the upper bearing edge 37, 40 of the tray.
- this lower bearing edge 35 forms two cuts in the walls corresponding to the two opposite sides of greater length of the sole and comprises a notch 36 on the walls corresponding to the two opposite sides of smaller length of the sole.
- the additional edge 37 of the tray may therefore be in some places below the oil level contained in the housing, once the oil pan mounted under the engine block and filled.
- a seal 33 elastomer is interposed between the sole 5 and the lower tray 2 when the tray and the sole are assembled to each other (by means of screws).
- the seal 33 is applied in pressure respectively between the lower periphery edge 35 of the sole 5 and the upper application edge 37, 40 corresponding to the periphery of the container body 2.
- This seal 33 extends in space (is not flat) so as to match the cutting geometry of the tray 2 and the sole 5, in particular, the seal 33 has two opposite parts, a front portion 39 and a rear portion 41, recessed downward relative to the longer longitudinal portions 43 of this seal 33.
- the seal 33 can be mounted on the application edges 35, 37, 40 and 42 of the sole 5 and the tray 2 left raw molding, the plastic body of the tray can absorb in combination with the elastomer seal imperfections of the sole edge.
- this seal 33 may be of elastomer with a T-shaped profile, and the bearing edge of the tray 2 may be shaped so as to define a groove adapted to receive the foot of the T of the seal 33.
- a rear plate-shaped portion 27 (right in the drawing) of this sole is wider and more rigid. This part 27 can receive the gearbox of the vehicle (not shown). Other elements not shown can be attached to this sole. For example, an engine timing case may be attached to a front plate portion 29, and a vehicle air conditioning compressor may be attached to one of the walls corresponding to the longer sides.
- fastening portions 31 at the bottom of the engine are formed at the upper part of the sole, in particular bores receiving fastening screws to the engine.
- the seal 33 may be silicone deposited on the support edge of the tray 2 without the need for a groove in this edge, or the seal 33 may comprise several pieces of elastomer or silicone.
