In preference three milking periods are assigned, while the fourth period is a rest period for the cows during which the installation can be cleaned. It is possible for the time periods to be close together and an overlap of the periods is likewise possible. By causing milking of the cows to take place in periods the behaviour of the cows is easier to follow and action can be undertaken in the case of aberrant behaviour, for instance as a consequence of disease or the like.
