Abstract

In a method of fitting a top or a bottom to the body of a can, the top or bottom is placed inside a die having a rolling surface. The top or bottom has an inwardly rolled edge defining a support surface adapted to be substantially mated with at least part of the rolling surface. An end portion of the can body is inserted between this rolling surface and this support surface. Thrust is then applied to the can body until it causes the end portion to roll around and envelop the support surface. The corresponding machine comprises at least one rolling die incorporating a bush defining a first rolling surface facing radially inwards and a plurality of jaws disposed along a perimeter corresponding to the shape of the can. The jaws are movable towards an inside wall of this bush and are shaped to define at least part of a second rolling surface which faces radially outwards. This second rolling surface is adapted to form an extension of the first rolling surface when the jaws are positioned close to the inside wall of the bush.

Description

The invention relates to a method of assembling a bottom or cover on a box body, by internal roll; it also relates to an assembly machine capable of carrying out this process.

Many boxes, at least partly metallic, are produced by a peripheral crimping creating a bead circumferentially projecting at the ends of the box. This bead constitutes an area particularly susceptible to corrosion (formation of rust when the box stays in a humid place, such as a bathroom. In addition, they are unsightly, which can be a disadvantage for certain items such as for example perfume products sold in aerosol type containers In this particular area where the decoration of the packaging is important for the promotion of the product, the presence of the bead interrupts the decoration and unaesthetically emphasizes the end of the packaging. In addition, since the crimping process is carried out after the painted and varnished decoration of the box body, known crimping tools damage this coating, which is one of the causes of the vulnerability to corrosion of this area.

Finally, the presence of the external bead prevents the stacking of such metal packaging, which poses problems for storage and handling.

Attempts have been made to achieve internal crimping, not protruding. as evidenced, for example, American patent US-A 3,452,897. However, to date, this type of crimping does not seem to be used industrially. In addition, its implementation requires welding before the operations leading to the development of said internal crimping, which significantly increases the manufacturing costs. Furthermore, American patent US-A 1 679 629 and British patent US-A 330 690 describe a method of assembling a bottom or cover to a box body, The bottom or cover has a raised edge and it is placed on a neck of the box body before simultaneous rolling of the parts in contact. This process does not allow high production rates to be reached.

The invention overcomes these drawbacks by proposing a new method of assembling the bottom or cover on the box body, resulting in internal crimping without a protruding bead at the periphery of the corresponding end of the box. The basic idea of the invention consists in using a preformed rolled edge on said bottom or cover as a bearing or reaction surface, during the internal rolling of the extreme portion of the box body.

  • - à placer dans une matrice munie d'une surface de roulage un fond ou couvercle à bord roulé vers l'intérieur, de façon que celui-ci définisse une surface d'appui épousant sensiblement au moins une partie de ladite surface de roulage;
More specifically, the invention therefore relates to a method of assembling a bottom or cover to a box body, characterized in that it consists:
  • - placing in a matrix provided with a rolling surface a bottom or cover with an inwardly rolled edge, so that the latter defines a bearing surface conforming substantially to at least part of said rolling surface;
  • - Maintain this bottom or cover substantially without constraint in said matrix; and
  • - Engaging an end portion of said box body between said rolling surface and said support surface and pushing said box body until the rolling of this end portion enveloping said support surface.

The invention also relates to a machine for assembling a box body and a bottom or cover, characterized in that it comprises at least one rolling die inside which a defined rolling surface is arranged. along a predetermined perimeter, depending on the shape of the box body, this matrix comprising a socket or the like defining a first part of the rolling surface, radially inward and jaws arranged along this predetermined perimeter, that these jaws are mounted movable inside said sleeve and movable in the direction of the internal wall thereof, these jaws being shaped to define, at least partially, a second part of the rolling surface radially outward , extending said first part in a position close to said jaws and said inner wall of said sleeve, and in that said rolling die comprises te gripping means capable of retaining a bottom or cover.

The invention will be better understood and other advantages thereof will appear more clearly in the light of the description which follows, given solely by way of example, and made with reference to the appended schematic drawings in which:
  • - Figure 1 is a schematic perspective view illustrating a machine for assembling a bottom or cover, on a box body, performing the operations according to the invention;

Referring to the drawings, there is shown a machine 11 for assembling bottoms or covers 12 to box bodies 13, tubular, respectively. This machine mainly consists of a drum 14 rotating around its main axis 15 for the sequencing of the different operations and here carrying four assembly assemblies 16 each comprising a rolling die 18 and a piston 19. The four assemblies d The assemblies are regularly arranged at the periphery of the drum and angularly offset by 90 ° with respect to each other. Each rolling die 18 comprises a socket 20 in the general shape of a bell, housing jaws 21, which can move radially under the action of a pusher 22 having a bearing section of varia ble axially and movable along an axis parallel to arrow A (Figure 8). In the example shown, concerning the assembly of circular bottoms and cylindrical box bodies, the sleeve 20 has a circular lower opening while the jaws 21 are arranged regularly circumferentially inside said sleeve, the bearing section variable being here a frustoconical bearing 26. It goes without saying, however, that these shapes are dictated only by that of the crimping contour. Depending on the shape of the box, the shape of the socket, the arrangement of the jaws and the shape of the pusher may be significantly modified without departing from the scope of the invention, the necessary structural modifications being within the scope of the skilled in the art.

La fiabilité de la préhension par la ventouse est améliorée grâce à un moyen d'aspiration, non représentée, séquentielle- ment raccordé à un conduit 30 traversant axialement le poussoir 18 et débouchant au centre de ladite ventouse 29.The rolling surface is distributed in the matrix 18 between the internal surface of the sleeve 20, in the vicinity of its lower opening and of the surface portions of the jaws 21. More precisely, the sleeve 20 defines a first part 20a of the surface of rolling, progressively extending radially inwards from the edge of its opening and having a suitable curved radial profile, while each jaw 21 has a curved profile surface 2la extended at its lower part by a small protruding bead 25. The set of surfaces 21a thus forms a second part of the rolling surface, circumferentially discontinuous, generally oriented towards the outside and extending said first part 20a of this rolling surface when said jaws are brought closer to the internal wall of said sleeve, under the action of pusher 22. This situation is clearly visible in Figure 8. We see that the jaws es are pushed radially outward when the pusher is moved axially in the direction of arrow A, that is to say when its frustoconical bearing 26 pushes all of the jaws radially outward, bearing on their back sides. An elastic ring 27 of elastomeric material is disposed in a housing defined by groove portions formed outside the jaws, so as to urge the latter in the direction of radial withdrawal, when the pusher is actuated in the opposite direction from that indicated by arrow A. On the other hand, the lower part of the pusher carries a gripping means 29, here in the form of a suction cup, capable of retaining a bottom or cover 12. The reliability of the gripping by the suction cup is improved by means of a suction means, not shown, sequentially connected to a conduit 30 axially passing through the pusher 18 and emerging at the center of said suction cup 29.

Each rolling die 18 is disposed above a piston 19, the axis of symmetry of which is aligned with the axis of the pusher. This piston is shaped to receive a box body 13, vertically, that is to say with an axial end of said box body resting on the upper surface of the piston. To this end, it is provided with a slight relief 31 in the form of a disc, the diameter of which corresponds to the internal diameter of the box body. The piston is movable along the actuating axis of the pusher, that is to say here vertically. More specifically, the drum 14 mainly comprises two horizontal plates 33 and 34 spaced from one another and separated by a cylindrical part 36 of smaller diameter. The lower plate 34 houses the pistons 19 in corresponding bores, and the lower faces of these pistons open from the lower face of the plate in order to be able to meet a lifting ramp 40, fixed, or a similar actuation means. The upper plate 33 carries the dies 18 aligned with the pistons 19. The cylindrical part 36 is provided with lateral recesses 37, semi-cylindrical, of shape and size suitable for receiving and driving bodies of boxes 13. These are introduced between the plates 33 and 34 by a conveying means 39 provided with a slide 39a and a broad-threaded screw 39b driving said box bodies. The bottoms or covers 12 are also introduced between the plates 33 and 34, by another suitable conveying means 42, here in the form of a conveyor belt. The end parts of the conveying parts 39 and 42 are arranged substantially tangentially to the drum 14, between the plates 33 and 34. An auxiliary evacuation cylinder 45 provided with semi-cylindrical lateral recesses 46 is mounted rotating in the vicinity of the periphery of the cylindrical part 36. It is rotated in synchronism with the drum 14 and cooperates with a guide 48 to deposit the body of boxes provided with their bottoms or covers on a conveying means 49 conveying them to a clamping station shown in FIG. 7. The latter is conventional and essentially comprises two knobs 52, 54 between which the internal rolled fastening the box body 13 and the bottom or cover 12, is capable of being crushed radially to ensure perfect sealing of the assembly.

On va maintenant décrire la mise en oeuvre du procédé de l'invention, plus particulièrement illustré aux figures 2 à 6.We will now describe the implementation of the method of the invention, more particularly illustrated in FIGS. 2 to 6.

It should be noted that the bottoms or covers 12 which are routed to the dies 18 are preformed to each have an inwardly rolled edge 12a. This rolled edge can conventionally be obtained by stamping, using a tool of suitable shape, which it has not been deemed useful to represent, this operation being in itself trivial. The funds or covers 12 thus preformed are deposited on the conveying means 42 so that said rolled edges 12a are oriented towards the plate 33 when the bottom or cover reaches the end of said conveying means. The movement of the latter is synchronized with the rotation of the drum 14 so that a bottom or cover 12 reaches below a die 18, in the situation illustrated in FIG. 2. The pusher 22 then lowers until 'that the gripping means 29 comes into contact with the central part of the bottom or cover 12. This is the situation illustrated in FIG. 3. At this phase of the process, the jaws 21 are set back relative to the surface internal of the sleeve 20, since the frustoconical bearing 26 is not in contact with said jaws. When the bottom or cover 12 adheres to the suction cup, the pusher 22 is actuated in the direction of arrow A, this which has the double consequence of placing the rolled edge 12a opposite said first part 20a of the rolling surface, then causing the radial displacement of the jaws 21 to completely trap the rolled edge 12a in the annular space defined between the parts 20a and 21a of said rolling surface. It should be noted that from this moment, the bottom or cover 12 is trapped by its rolled edge in the die 18, but that it is not, in practice, subjected to any tightening constrainite between the internal surface of the sleeve 20 and the jaws 21. The drum 14 then continues its rotation to the end of the conveying means 39 where a box body 13 is positioned on the corresponding piston 19. This is the situation illustrated in FIG. 4. The rotation of the drum continues until the piston 19 is actuated upwards when it passes over the ramp 20. This is the situation illustrated in FIGS. 5 and 8 which results in engaging the upper end portion of the can body between the rolling surface 20a, 21a and a bearing surface defined by the rolled edge 12a of the bottom or cover itself. The effect of this movement is to push the box body 13 axially until the end portion of the latter engaged in the die is rolled, this rolling enveloping the bearing surface defined by the rolled edge 12a. From this moment, the bottom or cover 12 and the box body 13 are secured to one another. The suction cup 29 is released and the piston 19, beyond the ramp 40, descends into its housing. This is the situation in FIG. 6. Then, the assembly, continuing its rotation, reaches the conveying means 49 which routes it to the clamping station illustrated in FIG. 7. A radial clamping of the two portions is then carried out. rolled of the box body and the bottom or cover, until crushing said rolled portions between the two knobs 52 and 54. This last operation achieves a perfectly sealed crimping, without prior welding.

The invention is applicable to the assembly of a deformable bottom or cover which is not necessarily metallic on a metal box body.
