Description
Die Erfindung betrifft biologisch abbaubare Copolymerisate
von Vinylestern mit cyclischen Ketenacetalen.
Es ist bekannt, daß Polymere, deren Kohlenstoffrückgrat
durch funktionelle Gruppen wie Ester-, Amid-, Carbonat-,
Urethan- oder Ether-Gruppen unterbrochen ist und deren Koh
lenwasserstoffanteile zwischen den funktionellen Gruppen
vorwiegend aliphatischer Natur sind, durch Mikroorganismen
abgebaut werden können (S. J. Huang, Encyclopedie of Polymer
Sciences Vol. 2, 220-243). Polyolefine mit einem reinen Koh
lenstoffrückgrat hingegen sind gegen einen mikrobiellen Be
fall resistent. Eine Ausnahme bildet beispielsweise Poly
vinylalkohol, der nach oxidativer Spaltung vollständig zu
Kohlendioxid und Wasser abgebaut wird (T. Suzuki et al., J.
Appl. Poly. Sci., Poly. Symp. 35 (1973), 431). Polyvinyl
acetat wird hingegen nur schwer abgebaut, da dieses zunächst
zu einem großen Teil zu Polyvinylalkohol hydrolysieren muß.
In W. J. Bailey et al., J. Polym. Sci. Chem. Ed. 20 (1982),
3021, ist die Herstellung von Vinylacetat-Copolymeren mit 33
bzw. 49 Mol-% 2-Methylen-1,3-Dioxepan beschrieben. Die biolo
gische Abbaubarkeit dieser Copolymerisate wird vermutet aber
nicht getestet. Nachteilig bei dieser Verfahrensweise sind
die niedrigen Umsatzraten (52 bzw. 68%) bei extrem langen
Polymerisationszeiten (bis 48 Stunden) sowie die durch den
hohen Initiatoranteil (1,0 bzw. 1,2 Mol-%) bedingten niederen
Molekulargewichte.
Aus der JP-A 02/214719 (Derwent-Abstract) sind Polymerisate
von Olefinen, Acrylaten, Vinylestern oder Styrolen mit 2-
Methylen-1,3-Dioxepan als hydrolysierbare Polymerisate zur
Verwendung in Schiffsfarben bekannt.
Vor diesem Hintergrund lag der Erfindung die Aufgabe zugrun
de, biologisch abbaubare Vinylester-Copolymerisate zur Ver
fügung zu stellen, welche bei möglichst niederen Ketenace
tal-Comonomergehalten biologisch abbaubar sind und hohe Mo
lekulargewichte aufweisen, die sie für für Vinylesterpolyme
risate typische Anwendungsbereiche tauglich machen.
Gegenstand der Erfindung sind biologisch abbaubare Vinyl
ester-Copolymerisate eines oder mehrerer Monomere aus der
Gruppe der Vinylester von unverzweigten oder verzweigten
Alkylcarbonsäuren mit 1 bis 18 C-Atomen, welche 0,1 bis 40
Gew.-%, bezogen auf das Gesamtgewicht des Copolymerisats, ei
nes oder mehrerer cyclischer Ketenacetale aus der Gruppe 2-
Methylen-1,3-dioxepan, 2-Methylen-1,3-dioxolan, 2-Methylen-
1,3-dioxan enthalten und ein Molekulargewicht <50 000 auf
weisen.
Bevorzugte Vinylester sind Vinylacetat, Vinylpropionat, Vi
nylbutyrat, Vinyl-2-ethylhexanoat, Vinyllaurat, 1-Methyl
vinylacetat, Vinylpivalat und Vinylester von α-verzweigten
Monocarbonsäuren mit 9 bis 11 C-Atomen, beispielsweise
VeoVa9® oder VeoVa10®. Besonders bevorzugt ist Vinylacetat.
Die Vinylester-Copolymerisate können gegebenenfalls 1,0 bis
65 Gew.-%, bezogen auf das Gesamtgewicht der Comonomerphase,
α-Olefine, wie Ethylen oder Propylen, und/oder Vinylaroma
ten, wie Styrol und/oder Vinylhalogenide, wie Vinylchlorid
und/oder Acrylsäureester bzw. Methacrylsäureester von Alko
holen mit 1 bis 10 C-Atomen, wie Methylacrylat, Methylmeth
acrylat, Ethylacrylat, Ethylmethacrylat, Propylacrylat, Pro
pylmethacrylat, n-Butylacrylat, n-Butylmethacrylat, 2-Ethyl
hexylacrylat und/oder ethylenisch ungesättigte Dicarbon
säureester bzw. deren Derivate wie Maleinsäure- und Fumar
säure-dialkylester mit unverzweigten oder verzweigten Alkyl
resten mit 1 bis 8 C-Atomen, beispielsweise Diisopropyl
fumarat, und Maleinsäureanhydrid enthalten.
Vorzugsweise enthalten die Vinylestercopolymerisate 1 bis 30
Gew.-%, besonders bevorzugt 2 bis 15 Gew.-%, der genannten cyc
lischen Ketenacetale, insbesonders 2-Methylen-1,3-dioxepan.
Das Molekulargewicht der Vinylestercopolymerisate beträgt
vorzugsweise mindestens 200 000.
Am meisten bevorzugte Vinylestercopolymerisate enthalten:
85 bis 98 Gew.-% Vinylacetat und 2 bis 15 Gew.-% 2-Methylen-1,3- dioxepan oder
70 bis 95 Gew.-% Vinylacetat, 5 bis 25 Gew.-% Ethylen, und/oder 5 bis 30 Gew.-% Maleinsäure- bzw. Fumarsäuredialkylester und 2 bis 15 Gew.-% 2-Methylen-1,3-dioxepan oder
50 bis 70 Gew.-% Vinylacetat, 10 bis 30 Gew.-% Vinylester einer α-verzweigten Carbonsäure, insbesonders VeoVa9® und/oder VeoVa10®, 5 bis 25 Gew.-% Ethylen und 2 bis 15 Gew.-% 2-Methy len-1,3-dioxepan oder
50 bis 70 Gew.-% Vinylacetat, 1 bis 30 Gew.-% Acrylsäureester, insbesonders n-Butylacrylat oder 2-Ethylhexylacrylat, 5 bis 25 Gew.-% Ethylen und 2 bis 15 Gew.-% 2-Methylen-1,3-dioxepan. Die Angaben in Gew.-% addieren sich jeweils auf 100 Gew.-%.

50 bis 70 Gew.-% Vinylacetat, 10 bis 30 Gew.-% Vinylester einer α-verzweigten Carbonsäure, insbesonders VeoVa9® und/oder VeoVa10®, 5 bis 25 Gew.-% Ethylen und 2 bis 15 Gew.-% 2-Methy len-1,3-dioxepan oder
50 bis 70 Gew.-% Vinylacetat, 1 bis 30 Gew.-% Acrylsäureester, insbesonders n-Butylacrylat oder 2-Ethylhexylacrylat, 5 bis 25 Gew.-% Ethylen und 2 bis 15 Gew.-% 2-Methylen-1,3-dioxepan. Die Angaben in Gew.-% addieren sich jeweils auf 100 Gew.-%.
Ein weiterer Gegenstand der Erfindung ist ein Verfahren zur
Herstellung der erfindungsgemäßen biologisch abbaubaren
Vinylester-Copolymerisate durch radikalische Copolymerisa
tion in Gegenwart von 0,005 bis 0,5 Mol-%, bezogen auf die
Comonomerphase, Radikalinitiatoren.
Die Initiierung erfolgt vorzugsweise mittels Radikalbild
nern, die im Bereich von 40 bis 80°C eine Halbwertszeit von
bis zu 100 Minuten haben. Geeignet sind beispielsweise Per
ester, Perdicarbonate, Diacylperoxide wie Di-t-amylperoxy
oxalat, t-Amylperoxyneodecandat, t-Butylperoxyneodecanoat,
t-Amylperoxypivalat, t-Butylperoxypivalat und Dicyclohexyl
peroxydicarbonat. Gegebenenfalls können die genannten radi
kalischen Initiatoren auch in bekannter Weise mit Reduk
tionsmittel kombiniert werden. Geeignet sind zum Beispiel
Formaldehydsulfoxylat-Salze oder Ascorbinsäure. Bei der Re
doxinitiierung werden dabei vorzugsweise eine oder beide Re
dox-Katalysatorkomponenten während der Polymerisation do
siert. Vorzugsweise beträgt die eingesetzte Menge an Radi
kalinitiator 0,005 bis 0,05 Mol-%, bezogen auf die Comonomer
phase.
Die Herstellung der Copolymerisate erfolgt vorzugsweise in
Masse oder Lösung. Copolymerisation in Emulsion oder Suspen
sion ist möglich, wobei allerdings mit einer teilweisen Hy
drolyse des cyclischen Ketenacetals gerechnet werden muß. So
entsteht beispielsweise aus 2-Methylen-1,3-dioxepan Essig
säure-4-hydroxybutylester. Die Polymerisation kann in den
üblichen Rührkesseln bzw. Autoklaven durchgeführt werden.
Die Verwendung von Schutzgas ist bevorzugt. Bei der
Copolymerisation von Ethylen beträgt der Ethylendruck 50 bis
50 000 kPa, bevorzugt 500 bis 5000 kPa.
Die Polymerisation kann diskontinuierlich oder kontinuier
lich, mit oder ohne Verwendung von Saatlatices, unter Vorla
ge aller oder einzelner Bestandteile des Reaktionsgemisches
oder unter teilweiser Vorlage und Nachdosierung der oder
einzelner Bestandteile des Reaktionsgemisches oder nach dem
Dosierverfahren ohne Vorlage durchgeführt werden. Alle Do
sierungen erfolgen vorzugsweise im Maße des Verbrauchs der
jeweiligen Komponente.
Für die bevorzugte Lösungspolymerisation geeignete Lösungs
mittel sind aliphatische Kohlenwasserstoffe wie Hexan, Hep
tan, Cyclohexan, oder Ester, wie Essigsäuremethylester, Es
sigsäure-t-butylester, oder Alkohole, wie t-Butanol, t-Amyl
alkohol, oder Ether, wie t-Butylmethylether.
Die Polymerisation wird in einem Temperaturbereich von 0 bis
100°C, vorzugsweise zwischen 40 und 80°C, durchgeführt. Bei
Initiierung der Polymerisation mit Redoxsystemen liegen die
Polymerisationstemperaturen im allgemeinen zwischen 20 und
80°C. Die Polymerisationsdauer beträgt im allgemeinen
zwischen 3 und 10 Stunden.
Die erfindungsgemäßen Copolymerisate können gegebenenfalls
gefüllt werden, wobei sich neben den üblichen Füllstoffen,
wie hochdisperse Kieselsäure oder Kreide, vor allem
biologisch abbaubare Füllstoffe, wie Stärken, modifizierte
Stärken oder andere Polysaccharide, anbieten. Ebenso können
die erfindungsgemäßen Copolymerisate mit Weichmachern,
vorzugsweise biologisch abbaubaren Weichmachern, modifiziert
werden. Beispiele hierfür sind unverzweigte Alkylester von
Bernsteinsäure oder höheren α,ω-Dicarbonsäuren,
gegebenenfalls endständig acylierte Polypropylenglykole,
aliphatische Ester von gegebenenfalls acylierten Fettsäuren
oder Citronensäure sowie Glycerincarbonsäureester.
Die erfindungsgemäßen Copolymerisate eignen sich beispiels
weise zur Herstellung von Folien wie Verpackungsfolien oder
Mulchfolien. Die in Suspension oder Emulsion erzeugten Co
polymerisate können als Binder für Vliese, insbesondere
solche auf Cellulosebasis, sowie als Beschichtungsmittel
verwendet werden.
Die nachfolgenden Beispiele dienen zur weiteren Erläuteerung
der Erfindung.
In einem 500-ml-Rundkolben mit Rührer, Heizbad, Rückflußküh
ler, Schutzgasanschluß und Dosiergefäß wurden 50 ml t-Buta
nol auf 65°C erwärmt. Innerhalb von 100 Minuten wurde eine
Mischung aus 98 g (1,14 mol) Vinylacetat, 2 g (17,5 mmol) 2-
Methylen-1,3-dioxepan, 0,3 g (1,2 mmol) t-Butyl-peroxyneo
decanoat und 100 ml t-Butanol so zudosiert, daß die Reak
tionstemperatur 68°C nicht überschritt. Anschließend ließ
man 5 Stunden bei 70°C nachreagieren. Das Produkt wurde
durch Entfernen des Lösungsmittels und Restmonomeren im
Vakuum isoliert.
Ausbeute: 98,5 g; Molekulargewicht Mw: 253 000.
Das Produkt enthielt 1,4 Gew.-% einpolymerisiertes 2-Methylen- 1,3-dioxepan.
Ausbeute: 98,5 g; Molekulargewicht Mw: 253 000.
Das Produkt enthielt 1,4 Gew.-% einpolymerisiertes 2-Methylen- 1,3-dioxepan.
Es wurde analog Beispiel 1 vorgegangen mit dem Unterschied,
daß 5 g (44 mmol) 2-Methylen-1,3-dioxepan vorgelegt wurden
und 95 g (1,1 mol) Vinylacetat mit 0,3 g (1,16 mmol) t-Amyl
peroxyneodecanoat dosiert wurden.
Ausbeute: quantitativ; Molekulargewicht Mw: 487 000.
Das Produkt enthielt 5,0 Gew.-% einpolymerisiertes 2-Methylen- 1,3-dioxepan.
Ausbeute: quantitativ; Molekulargewicht Mw: 487 000.
Das Produkt enthielt 5,0 Gew.-% einpolymerisiertes 2-Methylen- 1,3-dioxepan.
In einem 1-l-Rührautoklaven wurden 180 ml t-Butanol vorge
legt und auf 53°C erwärmt. Nach Zugabe von 0,28 g (1 mmol)
Dicyclohexyl-peroxodicarbonat wurden 900 kPa Ethylen aufge
preßt und eine Mischung aus 2,8 g (25 mmol) 2-Methylen-1,3-
dioxepan und 109,2 g (1,27 mol) Vinylacetat innerhalb von 40
Minuten zudosiert, wobei die Temperatur bei 53°C gehalten
wurde. Nach insgesamt 7 Stunden Reaktionszeit wurde die
Polymerisation durch Abkühlen abgebrochen und das Produkt
durch Abdampfen des Lösungsmittels entfernt.
Umsatz, bezogen auf Vinylacetat, 84,2%. Molekulargewicht
Mw: 258 000. Das Produkt enthielt 2 Gew.-% copolymerisiertes 2-
Methylen-1,3-dioxepan und 10 Gew.-% Ethylen.
Durchführung wie Beispiel 3, mit dem Unterschied, daß die
Menge an 2-Methylen-1,3-dioxepan auf 5,6 g (50 mmol) erhöht
wurde und die Vinylacetatmenge auf 106,6 g (1,24 mol) ver
mindert wurde.
Umsatz, bezogen auf Vinylacetat, 82%. Molekulargewicht Mw:
265 000. Das Produkt enthielt 4,3 Gew.-% copolymerisiertes 2-
Methylen-1,3-dioxepan und 8,4 Gew.-% Ethylen.
Durchführung wie Beispiel 1, mit der Abwandlung, daß eine
Mischung aus 75 g (0,87 mol) Vinylacetat, 20 g (0,16 mol)
Butylacrylat, 5 g (44 mmol) 2-Methylen-1,3-dioxepan und 0,3 g
(1,16 mmol) t-Amylperoxyneodecanoat dosiert wurden. Der
Umsatz war quantitativ. Molekulargewicht Mw: 447 000. Das
Produkt enthielt 5 Gew.-% copolymerisiertes 2-Methylen-1,3-
dioxepan.
Eine Mischung aus 50 g (0,58 mol) Vinylacetat, 5 g (44 mmol)
2-Methylen-1,3-dioxepan und 0,42 g (1 mmol) Dilauroylperoxid
wurde 5 Minuten lang auf 70°C erwärmt. Das Einsetzen der
Polymerisation war an der Viskositätszunahme erkennbar. Die
Mischung wurde in 207 g einer 0,35%igen wäßrigen
Polyvinylalkohollösung (Polyviol® M 05/240), die auf 75°C
erwärmt worden ist, eingerührt. Nach 4 Stunden Reaktionszeit
bei dieser Temperatur war die Polymerisation beendet. Die
NMR-Analyse ergab, daß 62 Gew.-% des 2-Methylen-1,3-dioxepan
copolymerisiert waren; der Rest war zu Essigsäure-4-
hydroxybutylester hydrolysiert. Das Produkt enthielt 5,5
Gew.-% copolymerisiertes 2-Methylen-1,3-dioxepan.
Durchführung wie Beispiel 1 mit der Abwandlung, daß kein 2-
Methylen-1,3-dioxepan eingesetzt wurde. Der Umsatz war
quantitativ; das Molekulargewicht Mw betrug 287 000.
Durchführung wie Beispiel 3 mit der Abwandlung, daß kein 2-
Methylen-1,3-dioxepan eingesetzt wurde. Der Umsatz, bezogen
auf Vinylacetat, betrug 87,9%; das Molekulargewicht Mw be
trug 238 000 und der Ethylengehalt betrug 11 Gew.-%.
Die Prüfung der biologischen Abbaubarkeit der Produkte aus
den Beispielen bzw. Vergleichsbeispielen erfolgte mittels
des Pilztests auf mikrobiellen Befall nach ISO 846 B und
durch den Eingrabetest nach DIN 53 739.
Aus den Polymeren der Beispiele und Vergleichsbeispiele wur
den Folien von 0,2 mm Stärke hergestellt und diese einem
Pilztest nach ISO 846, Verfahren B, unterzogen. Die Wachs
tumsstärke wurde qualitativ mit zunehmendem mikrobiellen
Befall mit 1 bis 5 bewertet. Die Verfärbung der Folien wurde
mit "2", keine Verfärbung mit "1" indiziert. Die Testergeb
nisse sind in Tabelle 1 aufgeführt.
Die Folien aus den Produkten der Beispiele 1 bis 4 und des
Vergleichsbeispiels B wurden dem Vergrabungstest zur Bestim
mung des Massenverlustes in aktivem Boden unterzogen. Nach 3
Monaten wurde der Gewichtsverlust durch biologischen Abbau
bestimmt. Die Ergebnisse sind in Tabelle 2 zusammengefaßt.

Claims (5)
1. Biologisch abbaubare Vinylester-Copolymerisate eines
oder mehrerer Monomere aus der Gruppe der Vinylester von
unverzweigten oder verzweigten Alkylcarbonsäuren mit 1
bis 18 C-Atomen, welche 0,1 bis 40 Gew.-%, bezogen auf das
Gesamtgewicht des Copolymerisats, eines oder mehrerer
cyclischer Ketenacetale aus der Gruppe 2-Methylen-1,3-

2. Biologisch abbaubare Vinylester-Copolymerisate nach An
spruch 1, dadurch gekennzeichnet, daß das Molekular
gewicht der Vinylestercopolymerisate mindestens 200 000
beträgt.
3. Biologisch abbaubare Vinylester-Copolymerisate nach An
spruch 1 oder 2, dadurch gekennzeichnet, daß die Vinyl
estercopolymerisate
85 bis 98 Gew.-% Vinylacetat und 2 bis 15 Gew.-% 2-Methylen- 1,3-dioxepan oder
70 bis 95 Gew.-% Vinylacetat, 5 bis 25 Gew.-% Ethylen und/oder 5 bis 30 Gew.-% Maleinsäure- bzw. Fumarsäuredi alkylester und 2 bis 15 Gew.-% 2-Methylen-1,3-dioxepan oder
50 bis 70 Gew.-% Vinylacetat, 10 bis 30 Gew.-% Vinylester einer α-verzweigten Carbonsäure, insbesonders VeoVa9® und/oder VeoVa10®, 5 bis 25 Gew.-% Ethylen und 2 bis 15 Gew.-% 2 -Methylen-1,3-dioxepan oder
50 bis 70 Gew.-% Vinylacetat, 1 bis 30 Gew% Acrylsäure ester, insbesonders n-Butylacrylat oder 2-Ethylhexyl acrylat, 5 bis 25 Gew.-% Ethylen und 2 bis 15 Gew.-% 2-Me thylen-1,3-dioxepan enthalten.
85 bis 98 Gew.-% Vinylacetat und 2 bis 15 Gew.-% 2-Methylen- 1,3-dioxepan oder
70 bis 95 Gew.-% Vinylacetat, 5 bis 25 Gew.-% Ethylen und/oder 5 bis 30 Gew.-% Maleinsäure- bzw. Fumarsäuredi alkylester und 2 bis 15 Gew.-% 2-Methylen-1,3-dioxepan oder
50 bis 70 Gew.-% Vinylacetat, 10 bis 30 Gew.-% Vinylester einer α-verzweigten Carbonsäure, insbesonders VeoVa9® und/oder VeoVa10®, 5 bis 25 Gew.-% Ethylen und 2 bis 15 Gew.-% 2 -Methylen-1,3-dioxepan oder
50 bis 70 Gew.-% Vinylacetat, 1 bis 30 Gew% Acrylsäure ester, insbesonders n-Butylacrylat oder 2-Ethylhexyl acrylat, 5 bis 25 Gew.-% Ethylen und 2 bis 15 Gew.-% 2-Me thylen-1,3-dioxepan enthalten.
4. Verfahren zur Herstellung von biologisch abbaubaren
Vinylester-Copolymerisaten nach Anspruch 1 bis 3,
dadurch gekennzeichnet, daß die Vinylestercopolymerisate
durch radikalische Copolymerisation in Gegenwart von
0,005 bis 0,5 Mol-%, bezogen auf die Comonomerphase,
Radikalinitiatoren hergestellt werden.
5. Verfahren zur Herstellung von biologisch abbaubaren
Vinylester-Copolymerisaten nach Anspruch 4, dadurch ge
kennzeichnet, daß die Vinylestercopolymerisate in Masse,
Lösung, Emulsion oder Suspension copolymerisiert wer
den.
