Es wurde herausgefunden., daß eine HIP-Behandlung die Streuung nicht nurHot isostatic pressing (HIP) is the simultaneous application of heat and pressure by means of an inert, i.e. neutral Working fluids. It was found that HIP treatment zinc sulfide and zinc selenide samples produce an improvement beyond the removal of pores. The treatment resulted in a significant improvement in transparency at wavelengths shorter than two micrometers. Samples of zinc sulfide were also found to have improved transmission properties throughout effective spectral bandwidth obtained. The limit in the transparency of zinc sulfide and zinc selenide is on Scattering and absorption mechanisms attributed. At wavelengths below two micrometers there is presumably scattering and not absorption the main cause of limitation of transmittance or permeability. It was found out., that a HIP treatment doesn't just reduce the spread

HIP-Behandlung das stöchiometrische Mengenverhältnis der Atome der Verbindung sowohl für ZnS als auch für ZnSe herstellt. by reducing or eliminating the porosity instead also by reducing or eliminating inclusions ■ the second phase is reduced by separating impurities? and - in the case of tin sulfide - non-cubic ... polymorphic zinc sulfide is converted into the cubic form. Overall, HIP treatment reduces the sorption, in that any absorbent species that may be present can diffuse. It was also found that. HIP treatment establishes the stoichiometric ratio of the atoms of the compound for both ZnS and ZnSe.
·.'A method according to the invention for treating an er-; Certificate from ZnS or ZnSe consists in the control of the; chemical potential on the surface of the product, heating the product and applying isostatic pressure. The control of the chemical potential takes t 'is preferably by wrapping the product in a Fo v lie of inert material, which still allows a certain amount of vapor exchange. ·. '
In the following the invention is with reference to the Drawing explained in more detail, which shows the transmission spectra of a sample of ZnS before and after treatment.
Hot isostatic pressing (HIP), i.e. simultaneous use of heat and pressure by means of an inert working fluid, is used in the metallurgical production of metal powder pressed parts and castings applied to the breaking strength and the resistance to material fatigue to improve. The invention uses similar HIP equipment to treat zinc sulfide and zinc selenide samples. The samples to be treated are placed in a conventional ■ HIP furnace. The furnace is evacuated and then pressurized with an inert gas such as argon. One adds heat to and ensures that heat and pressure stabilize.
Die Behandlung mitThe pressure and heat are for a period
sufficient to remove a variety of contaminants and defects from the samples. The samples treated included zinc sulfide obtained by chemical vapor deposition (CVD) and hot pressed zinc sulfide. CVD zinc selenide samples were also treated. The common commercial samples of zinc sulfide and zinc selenide are colored and translucent. In the case of zinc sulfide, the color results from deviations from a strict stoichiometric proportion of the atoms in the material. The rehearsals are rather
translucent as transparent, because light is scattered by defects in the material mass. The exact nature of all different types of defects is not known. The color, types, and relative amounts of light scattering defects are determined by the methods used in preparing the material and by the process conditions of the preparation. The scattering errors limit the transparency at wavelengths that are shorter than about 2 micrometers. In addition, there are some absorption strips at different wavelengths, which depend on how the sample is manufactured. The long-wave limit of the transmission band is an inherent property of the material and is caused by quantum mechanical absorption phenomena. For wavelengths between about 2 micrometers and the long-wave limit, the transmission is in principle limited by absorption phenomena that can be traced back to impurities. The limitation of the transparency in these materials in the visible and in the near infrared range is based on a combination of incompletely characterized absorption and scattering phenomena, with scattering, however, predominating. The short-wave limit of the transmission range is ultimately an inherent property of the material; a non-stoichiometric quantity ratio, impurities and other punctiform defects can reduce the transparency for wavelengths that are close to the short-wave limit. Treatment with
Hot isostatic pressing (HIP) reduces these limitations not only by reducing or eliminating the porosity of the material, but also by reducing and eliminating many of the defects that contribute to scattering and absorption. This is due to a combination of Fak r factors, which are generated by simultaneous application of heat and pressure in the HIP treatment. The heat supplied allows impurities normally present in the material to diffuse out. These impurities may consist of actual impurities from contaminating atoms of elements other than the ideal compound or in defects in the crystal lattice such as defects or interstitial atoms. In any event, these impurities will diffuse outwardly to the surface of the sample at a rate that is a function of temperature. Atoms which cause such impurities may exist in the sulfide or selenide crystal as distinct separate phases. The heat supplied also serves to reduce or eliminate these inclusions of deposits of the second phase of the compound being treated. The pressure applied helps eliminate any residual porosity that was in the sample prior to treatment and prevents the formation of new porosity that might otherwise develop during the process. In addition, the pressure limits the volatilization of the compounds, since the compounds used have a considerable vapor pressure at the temperatures required for the treatment. In the case of zinc sulfide compounds, the optically isotropic cubic crystal form has a higher density than the birefringent hexagonal form. It has been found that the pressure applied in the "HIP" treatment promotes the conversion of non-cubic polymorphic crystals to cubic crystals. In addition, the pressure decreases the equilibrium concentration of interatomic atoms and crystal lattice defects and generally decreases the solubility of impurities.

Samples of zinc sulfide included both hot-pressed material and material made by chemical vapor deposition (CVD). Zinc selenide samples were made from CVD material. It has been found that samples made from hot-pressed zinc selenide have significantly poorer transmission properties than samples made from CVD zinc selenide T, which are not generally available. However, the treatment also improves the properties of hot-pressed zinc selenide. The duration of treatment depends on the initial quality of the sample. The better the quality, ie the transmittance, of the sample, the shorter the treatment time can be in order to achieve a certain improvement in the transmission properties. It has been found that hot-pressed zinc sulfide material has greater concentrations of impurities or defects which cause scattering than zinc sulfide obtained by a CVD process. The duration of treatment is also determined by the thickness of the initial sample. The larger the thickness, the longer the treatment time must be in order to achieve a predetermined degree of improvement in the transmittance.
As mentioned above, it was found that the HIP treatment of samples improves the optical properties of optical elements. This is due to the interaction of several Factors attributed. The heat applied appears to be diffusing out impurities from the core of the sample to favor the outer surface. The pressure limits the volatilization of the compound and also helps prevent existing ones Eliminate porosity and the formation of new porosity to prevent. With zinc sulfide, the pressure is also likely to force any bolymorphs present into the cubic one Shape. This provides a guideline in selecting the operating temperature and pressure. The temperature should be high enough be about the diffusion of impurities from the Allow body of the sample. The pressure should be high enough on the one hand to prevent volatilization and on the other hand
The treatment time is determined both by the thickness of the sample and by its initial optical quality. Samples with low transmittance require a longer treatment time in order to achieve a predetermined value of the optical transparency. An upper limit to the duration of the treatment is given by excessive grain growth that can take place during prolonged treatment. It has also been found that the optical improvement value of CVD zinc sulfide is significantly greater than that of hot pressed zinc sulfide samples. This is probably due to the fact that the hot-pressing process produces large-scale imperfections which do not diffuse out as well with this process.

Die tatsäch]ichen Verfahrensparameter werdentreated at a temperature of 990 ° C and a pressure of 5000 psi (pound-force per square inch; 1 psi = 6.8948x10 'N / mm). The treatment produced a visible improvement in the optical properties of the sample. A pressure of 30,000 psi and a temperature of 1000 ° C was used on a hot-pressed zinc sulfide sample and a CVD zinc selenide sample and again resulted in a substantial improvement in optical properties. A 15 mm thick sample of CVD zinc sulfide was successfully treated in about 24 hours at a temperature of about 1000 ° C and a pressure of 30,000 psi. Temperatures in the range of 700 ° C to 1050 ° C and pressures in the range of 5000 psi to 30,000 psi were used with different types of samples. The field of application times ranged from 3 hours for the sample mentioned small thickness to u ^ 36 hours for samples of greater thickness. The invention is of course not restricted to these process parameters. Significantly different? Combinations of temperature, pressure and treatment time produce significant improvements in the optical quality of the treated samples. The actual process parameters are

In order to achieve a predetermined value of the improvement, significantly lower temperatures and pressures can be used in individual cases.
Dies liegt vermutlich an seiner inerten Natur. Some samples were first wrapped in a film of a second material prior to the application of heat and pressure in the HIP device. These wraps are not vacuum-tight, but they serve to limit the vapor exchange between the samples and the reaction chamber and to control the chemical potential of the volatile constituents in the samples, which has a favorable effect on the treatment. The control of the chemical potential of the volatile constituents on the surface of the samples can also be achieved by other means, for example by using dopants in the working gas or solids that give off types of vapor. Foils made of graphite, mild steel, tantalum, copper and platinum were used. The platinum wrapper produced the best results in improving the transmission properties of the samples. This is presumably due to its inert nature.
It is water-clear because the treatment increases the concentration of light-scattering imperfections has reduced significantly. The HIP treatment improves that Transmittance at wavelengths greater than 2 micrometers, considerable. Other samples of ZnS were similarly treated at 30,000 psi and 990 ° C for 24 hours. The thickness of the samples ranged from 0.4 to 1.5 cm.

sentlich verbessert. The transmission of the sample at a Wavelength of 0.5 micrometer was measured with a spectrometer before treatment. The measurement resulted in one Value of 5%. After the treatment, a value of 50% was determined for the transmission. This major improvement is mainly due to the correction of the stoichiometric ratio made by the treatment was brought about. The light scattering of the sample before and after the treatment was also measured. For this purpose, a helium-neon laser was used as the light source with a wavelength of 0.6328 micrometers The proportion of the light scattered by 90 ° compared to the incident laser beam was measured using the unit sr "(sr = unit solid angle) determined as follows:
This shows that the types of impurities in this material are the main causes of scattering. The phenomenon This scatter is responsible for the reduced transmittance at low wavelengths and will, presumably effectively reduced by the HIP treatment.
