Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain the sintered body of high purity and high density by heating raw material powder to sublimate and remove the impurities adsorbed on the raw material powder surfaces then hermetically sealing the same in a vessel, putting the vessel in a hot hydrostatic press and pressing the same under elevated temperature.
CONSTITUTION: Raw material powder, e.g., CdS powder is heated to about 500°C under vacuum to sublimate not less than 20% of the total weight of the raw material powder and remove the impurities such as moisture contained in the raw material powder. Thence, the residues in the vessel are put in a vessel of glass, ceramics or metals, after which the vessel is put in a hot hydrostatic press and is pressed under elevated temperature, whereby the CdS sintered body of high purity is obtained. If the sublimated vapors are recovered, the losses by the reduced weight of the powder raw material itself are prevented. Rather, the powder recovered from the foregoing vapors is of fine particles, has no deposite and is ideally suited as raw material powder.
