Abstract

PURPOSE:To eliminate internal defects of a polycrystalline zinc selenide body without causing pollution due to impurities and cracking by interposing a specified substance between the body and a tightly sealed vessel holding it and by heat compressing the body. CONSTITUTION:An interposing substance 4 or a graphite sheet 6 having low reactivity with zinc selenide and a tightly sealed vessel 1 is interposed between a polycrystalline zinc selenide body 3 or platelike polycrystalline zinc selenide 5 and the vessel 1 holding it, and the zinc selenide is heat compressed by hot hydrostatic pressing. The preferred substance 4 is a carbon material such as carbon or graphite or an oxide material such as SiO2 or Al2O3. The substance 4 is used in the form of powder, a thin film, a sheet or the like between the body 3 and the capsule 1.
