Es ist allgemein bekannt, daß Glas in seinem jungfräulichen Zustand ein sehr haltbares Material ist,
jedoch verringern Kratzer und Abrieb auf der v> Glasoberfläche seine Festigkeit beträchtlich. Dementsprechend
besitzen Glasgegenstände, z. B. Behälter, wie Glasgefäße, Flaschen, Gläser und ähnliche, ihre höchste
Festigkeit unmittelbar nach der Formung; diese Festigkeit nimmt nämlich ab, wenn die Fläche des
Glasgegenstiindes andere Flächen berührt, wie es bei der Prüfung, der Verarbeitung, beim Verpacken, beim
Verladen und bei der Verwendung des Gegenstandes durch den Konsumenten auftreten kann.
Um dieses Problem zu lösen, ist in der Glasindustrie ■»
zur Entwicklung von dünnen, festhaftenden, glatten, schaden verhindernden Überzügen viel geforscht worden,
um die Glasfestigkeit zu erhalten und zu erreichen, daß der Glasgegenstand ohne Schaden gehandhabt
werden kann. Es gibt hauptsächlich zwei Arten solcher to
schadenverhindernder Überzüge. Bei der einen Art wird der Behälter mit einem dünnen organischen Überzug
am kalten Ende des Kühlofens überzogen, wo die Temperatur etwa 93 bis 205° C beträgt. Die hierbei
verwendeten Überzüge sind wasserlösliche Polyoxy- ^1
äthylenstearate (US-PS 28 13 045), Polyäthylen (US-PS ?.9 95 533 und US-PS 29 65 596) oder andere organische
Materialien (US-PS 34 45 275, 34 87 035, 33 57 853 und
32 96 174).
Bei der zweiten Art von Überzügen wird der
Glasbehälter zuerst mit Metalloxiden, wie Oxiden von Zinn, Titan, Vanadium oder Zirkon, bei Temperaturen
von 538 bis 593° C überzogen, und danach wird darüber ein organischer Schutzüberzug aufgebracht. Solche
Doppelüberzüge werden in folgenden US-PS beschrieben33 23 889,34 25 859,35 98 632,35 54 787,34 98 825,
34 18 154, 34 20 693, 34 45 269, 34 07 085, 34 14 429 und
33 52 707.
Die obigen Überzüge werden während des Formungs- und Kühlungsablaufes aufgebracht. Diese
Überzüge erfüllen ihre Schutzaufgabe bei der Handhabung der Glasbehälter i. a. gut, doch versagen sie bei
starker mechanischer Beanspruchung, z. B., wenn die Glasgefäße fallengelassen werden, besonders wenn die
Glasbehälter unter Überdruck stehen, z. B. bei Füllung mit Bier oder kohlensäurehaltigen alkoholfreien
Getränken.
Erfindungsgemäß soll ein Überzug für Glasbehälter geschaffen werden, der die nach dem Bruch des
Glasbehälters zerbrochenen Glasfragmente festhalten kann, um so Verletzungen zu vermeiden.
In letzter Zeit ist die Aufmerksamkeit auf dieses Problem gerichtet worden:

Überziehen eines Glasbehälters mit einem lose oder fest anhaftenden Kunststoffmaterial, welches
einen Beutel bildet, der die Glasbruchstücke festhält, wenn der Glasbehälter zerbricht. Der Film
wird dadurch gebildet, daß pulverisiertes Polyäthylen auf der Glasfiasche aufgeschmolzen wird.

Leichter Glasbehälter mit einer Wandungsstärke von 0,15 bis 0,70 mm, der auf der Außenseite von
einer Umhüllung eines thermoplastischen Materials umgeben ist, dessen Wandungsstärke mindestens
der des Glases gleicht.

Glasbehälter, die dadurch gegen Zerbrechen widerstandsfähig gemacht worden sind, daß die
äußere Fläche mit einer dünnen, besonders gut haftenden Kunststoffschicht überzogen wird, die im
wesentlichen aus einem Copolymer von Äthylen und Acryl-Copolymeren besteht. Es wird eine
Grundierung verwendet, damit das Copolymer fest auf der Fläche des Glasgegenstandes haftet.
Wie sich aus betriebsinternen Untersuchungen ergeben hat, halten weiche, flexible Elastomerüberzüge
Glasbruchstücke besonders gut fest, doch sind solche Überzüge für die Verwendung auf Glasbehältern
normalerweise deshalb nicht geeignet, da ihr Widerstand gegen Abrieb und Verschrammen gering, ihre
Gleiteigenschaften schlecht und ihre Oberfläche klebrig ist, wodurch sich derartige Behälter in automatischen
Abfüllstraßen nicht verarbeiten lassen. Die vorliegende Erfindung verbessert die physikalischen und Oberflächeneigenschaften
solcher Überzugsmaterialien durch chemische Vernetzung und schafft damit neue Möglichkeiten
zur Lösung der gestellten Aufgabe.
An sich kann jede Glasunterlage mit den im
folgenden näher erläuterten Materialien überzogen werden, wenngleich in der besonderen Ausführung
dieser Erfindung ein Glasbehälter verwendet wird.
Erfindungsgemäß wird eine chemisch umsetzbare Masse auf eine Glasoberfläche aufgetragen und
anschließend durch Wärme oder andere Energieformen zu einem polymeren Schutzfilm umj. /t. Die
chemisch umsetzbare Überzugsmasse um...dt mindestens

ein elastomeres organisches Polymer und
eine organische Peroxid-Verbindung.
Das elastomere organische Polymer hat eine äußerste Dehnbarkeit von mindestens 100%. Zur Zeit der Aufbringung auf die Glasoberfläche ist das Polymer thermoplastisch, d. h., es ist nicht vernetzt, aber es kann anschließend durch das Zusammenwirken der organischen Peroxidverbindung und Wärme oder einer anderen Energieform vernetzt werden.

Das elastomere organische Polymer hat eine äußerste Dehnbarkeit von mindestens 100%. Die Aufbringung der Überzugsmasse auf das in Glassubstrat kann durch eine Vielzahl verschiedener in der Überzugstechnik bekannter Methoden durchgeführt werden, z. B. durch Aufspritzen, Eintauchen, Aufwalzen, Aufschmelzen oder durch Siebdruck von flüssigen Zusammensetzungen, die Lösungsmittel oder j, Dispergentien zusätzlich zum wesentlichen Polymer und der organischen Peroxid-Verbindung enthalten. Ebenfalls kann eine Heiß-Schmelzbeschichtung, eine Extrusions- oder Pulver-Beschichtung durchgeführt werden sowie die Anbringung eines vorgeformten Filmes oder einer Hülse der Polymer-Peroxid-Zusammensetzung.

Die Aufbringung der Überzugsmasse auf das in Glassubstrat kann durch eine Vielzahl verschiedener in der Überzugstechnik bekannter Methoden durchgeführt werden, z. B. durch Aufspritzen, Eintauchen, Aufwalzen, Aufschmelzen oder durch Siebdruck von flüssigen Zusammensetzungen, die Lösungsmittel oder j, Dispergentien zusätzlich zum wesentlichen Polymer und der organischen Peroxid-Verbindung enthalten. Ebenfalls kann eine Heiß-Schmelzbeschichtung, eine Extrusions- oder Pulver-Beschichtung durchgeführt werden sowie die Anbringung eines vorgeformten Filmes oder einer Hülse der Polymer-Peroxid-Zusammensetzung.
Nach dem Aufbringen wird der Überzug getrocknet, um, falls es notwendig ist, jegliche flüchtige Materialien,
wie z. B. Lösungsmittel oder Dispergentien, zu entfer-4r>
nen, und gleichzeitig oder anschließend wird der Überzug vernetzt durch die Anwendung von Wärme
oder einer anderen Energieform, wie z. B. durch infrarote, sichtbare oder ultraviolette Strahlung, ionisierende
Strahlung, Radiofrequenz- oder Mikrowellenstrahlung oder Ultraschallbestrahlung.
Zusätzlich zu dem erforderlichen Polymer- und Peroxid-Material und dem wahlfreien polyfunktionellen
Monomer kann die Überzugsmasse ein oder mehrere zusätzliche Bestandteile enthalten, die das Aussehen des

nicht ihren wesentlichen Zweck, Glasbruchstücke zusammenzuhalten, beeinträchtigen. Solche zusätzlichen
Bestandteile können Färbungsmittel, Weichmacher, oberflächenaktive Mittel, Verstärkungsmittel,

Claims (6)
1. Verfahren zum Herstellen eine:» polymeren Schutzüberzuges auf eher Glasoberfläche, der '■>
Glasbruchstücke festhält, dadurch gekennzeichnet,
daß auf die Glasoberfläche ein Gemisch eines elastomeren organischen Polymeren und einer organischen Peroxid-Verbindung aufgetragen
und daß diese Überzugsmasse danach in situ derart mit Energie beaufschlagt wird, daß das
Polymere vernetzt wird.
2. Verfahren nach Anspruch 1, dadurch gekennzeichnet, daß es mit einem elastome:ren Polymer
einer äußersten Dehnbarkeit von mindestens 100% r> durchgeführt wird.
3. Verfahren nach Anspruch 1, dadurch gekennzeichnet, daß es mit einer organischen Peroxid-Verbindung
durchgeführt wird, die mindestens eine Sauerstoff-Sauerstoff-Bindung besitzt. m
4. Verfahren nach Anspruch 1, dadurch gekennzeichnet, daß es mit einer polymeren vernetzbaren
Überzugsmasse durchgeführt wird, die 90 bis 99,99 Gewichtspro2:ent des elastomeren organischen Polymers
und 10 bis 0,01 Gewichtsprozent der y, organischen Peroxid-Verbindung enthält.
5. Glasbehälter, der mindestens teilweise mit einem polymeren Schutzüberzug versehen ist, um
einem Zerspringen des Glasbehälters unter Druck zu widerstehen, dadurch gekennzeichnet, daß der jo
Schutzüberzug in situ auf dem Glasbehälter aus einer Überzugsmasse, die ein elastomeres organisches
Polymer und eine organische Peroxid-Verbindung enthält, durch Vernetzung unter dem Einfluß
von Energie gebildet ist. r>
6. Glasbehälter nach Anspruch 5, dadurch gekennzeichnet, daß die Dicke des polymeren Films
mindestens 0,005 cm beträgt.
